Successfully utilized by both statisticians and practitioners, Biostatistics is an algebra-based text geared towards the advanced undergraduate and graduate student.

Daniel 12 New International Version (NIV). 12 At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. But at that time your people-everyone whose name is found written in the book-will be delivered. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.

This First Edition of Statistics moves the curriculum in innovative ways while still looking relatively familiar. Statistics utilizes intuitive methods to introduce the fundamental idea of statistical inference. These intuitive methods are enabled through statistical software and are accessible at very early stages of a course. The text also includes the more traditional methods such as t-tests, chi-square tests, etc., but only after students have developed a strong intuitive understanding of inference through randomization methods.

The text is designed for use in a one-semester introductory statistics course. The focus throughout is on data analysis and the primary goal is to enable students to effectively collect data, analyze data, and interpret conclusions drawn from data. The text is driven by real data and real applications. Although the only prerequisite is a minimal working knowledge of algebra, students completing the course should be able to accurately interpret statistical results and to analyze straightforward data sets.

I read the poor reviews for this book but needed it for a course for the homework assignments. The first 1/3 or so was fairly clear. Farther in, it got worse. This book for the most part covers the same things a "regular" statistics textbook does at the introductory level with only a few public health-specific formulas or tests. It is wordy when it doesn't need to be (and in fact, I think sometimes that makes things more confusing) and does a very poor job of helping you through the steps of some of the more complicated formulas. I consulted google for clarity and found many resources online explained concepts from this book very simply in FAR less space. Sometimes all you really need in statistics is the step by step walkthrough for example problems and I was not happy to see that some of the sample problems basically give you a formula and the answers - which is not much more helpful than just doing the exercises and checking your answers in the back of the book. If you can get away with it, I would recommend not purchasing this book and using a reserve copy at your library if it is available, or maybe just photocopying the homework questions necessary and then using your instructor's notes or online resources for the rest. I won't be keeping it and will probably buy another statistics book to keep on hand as a reference. Really disappointed that with so many editions they have not improved the quality.

I find this book hard to understand. I took basic statistics approximately 10 years ago, and thus my knowledge on the subject is highly limited. This book assumes you know quite a bit about statistics already. The explnations and examples use assumptions that I am not able to follow. There are no headlines within the chapters for important information/formulas, so these are difficult to decipher. Also, my professor is continually saying how the book is just wrong on certain topics. It does not use SPSS, it uses minitab. I would not recommend this book to a beginning stats user. There are better texts out there for this class. I gave it an extra star for having good examples that use real life situations.

Clear, comprehensive and well-written - and best of all, this is the penultimate edition, so available used at around 5% of the current latest edition. Thankfully, basic stats hasn't changed for close to 300 years, so the edition before last works for everyone except poor students forced to buy the latest one.

Thought the Kindle version would be better because of the search feature but search is severely limited. Will spend the extra for a hard copy next time.

Helped me understand how to apply various statistical tests in a methodical manner. Only thing I didn't like was that it was loose-leaf, which I was not expecting

I am not a math whiz by any means, but I've had other statistics textbooks that were a lot more helpful than this one. It doesn't always break down all the steps in a problem and often doesn't include why to use certain formulas or why to use certain tables in the appendix. It's not written like it's geared towards students, its written like reference material for statisticians who already know what they're doing. Then again, the professor who teaches the class in which I use this book can barely speak English, so I'm learning everything strictly from this textbook.

Excellent, thorough, comprehensive guide to the basics of statistics. Especially useful in clinical epidemiology. Only problem is that the answers to the questions are provided only for odd numbers. Fail. Excel spreadsheets available and very useful. I use STATA so that was missing in the book. In any event, in spite of these shortcomings, Daniel has changed my way of approaching and understanding statistics applied in medicine and healthcare.
Great!
