When I first met Simon Aspinall in 1991, during his initial visit to the United Arab Emirates, we became friends immediately. Not just because he was glowing in his appreciation of my book The Birds of the United Arab Emirates (whose title he obviously liked!), but because he had a quiet knowledge of all things natural and was able to appreciate and identify everything he saw, especially the birds.

Simon Aspinall is a lifelong birder who lives in the United Arab Emirates. Positives: These include a good treatment on the status and distribution of the birds of the region. His books include Shell Birdwatching Guide to the United Arab Emirates. The descriptions are thorough and where applicable, key field marks are BOLD to hi-lite the points. I have found that the habitats and occurrences, by and large, are accurate.
