His head was throbbing, and he could hear the hum of what sounded like electrical instruments all around him. The steady drip of liquid was almost deafening to his ears s again and saw the strip of neon in the ceiling above him. That was what was blinding him. Why didn’t they turn the damn thing off? Was he in a hospital? The pain of applying his brain almost caused him to lose consciousness again. But if he was, how the hell had he got here? He didn’t remember a thing after getting into his car. The smell of Lysol and pine disinfectant was sickening.

Once again Emma Darcy delivers with her usual brash style. Like many of her novels, her male character faces a challenge to win his lady's heart. As quite often, the same storyline is used where he confronts an unpleasant boyfriend from her past in his inimitable direct style whereupon he confronts his enemy head-on and forces his lady to confront her "demons" so she can heal her heart to be with him. This isn't a bad novel but the same sort of storyline sadly doesn't not engender as much appreciation that an original plot line would. It is rather reminiscent of her other novels (e.g The Bridal Bargain, The Billionaire Bridegroom and the Cattle King's Bride) where in the first two, like this novel, the male takes the same approach. As per usual, the male makes an unattractive error, which doesn't portray him in the best light (its Hugh's pride in this novel). In this case, in the big showdown between Angie Blessing ex-boyfriend and Hugh Fullbright, he uses her somewhat as a pawn in his childish "one-upmanship" rivalry with Angie's ex, whom he has unpleasant history with. The issue of his pride is challenged whereupon Angie's ex challenge him to take his "left-overs" which is really unpleasant. Not a bad story to read if you like high-drama which Emma Darcy delivers with style. However, the same storyline doesn't capture my interest and sadly disappoints for one who can recognise the pattern.

Well! this is an outrageous plot and funny to boot. The underlying conniving by Hugo towards Angie's stuffy ex-boyfriend of three years, Paul, was intriguing - I wondered how it was going to blow up. Which it did. And the HEA? Most innovative one I've ever read.

The chauffeur, James, steals the show. Politically correct with a hint of cheekiness and witty throw aways with his boss, James often has to rescue Hugo, advising him how to win this game of love. So funny!

I know this one will be an enjoyable re-read in my Emma Darcy collection. Is she faultless? I think so.

His Bought Mistress by Emma Darcy
Harlequin Presents # 2439 - January 2005

Angie's photo on a prominent billboard declaring her to be Foxy Angel and looking for a mate was the beginning of her whole world going upside down. It was a mistake. The picture was supposed to be of her roommate, Francine. Now the client she's working with, Hugh, thinks she's on the make and her boyfriend of three years has dumped her. But it's Hugh's attentions that have Angie all stirred up. He's rich, powerful, charismatic, and very Alpha. So on a whim she agrees to go on a weekend trip with him. It's on the flight home that Hugh learns that Angie's former boyfriend was his rival in school, a bit of news he keeps to himself. To Hugh, nothing would be more satisfying than to show up Paul just what he'd thrown away. Only where in all this did Angie's feelings fit in?

There were moments in this book that were a groan ... Angie's description of Hugh as a jungle cat and carrying on that theme. I guess that's one of the Alpha things about some Presents that are less appealing. Hugh has such a large ego and often forgets that his power can overwhelm. Angie does her best to curb him, but Hugh is an Alpha through and through and his actions almost destroy everything. I was proud of how Angie stood up for herself. Ms Darcy never disappoints ... this was a very enjoyable read.

The instant Australian billionaire Hugo Fullbright sees Angie Blessing he knows he has to have her. There's no doubt about the instant sizzling sexual attraction between them! So why, at first, does Angie refuse his offer?

Angie cannot tell Hugo the real story. But finally succumbs to his his powers of seduction and agrees to join him on a weekend trip to Tokyo... not realizing that he's a man used to paying for what he wants, and that she is been bought - and brought - for his pleasure.

My comments : There is Hugo, can you say cad? and Angie is a strong woman for the most part, then there is Paul Angie's inattentive boyfriend. Let the fights begin.
