Kimberly Killion's debut medieval romance is fresh in vision and a very welcome addition to the genre. After learning that this was Kimberly Killion's debut novel I was shocked. I am curious to see where she takes us in her next novel and I am sure it will be just as captivating. 3 people found this helpful.

The startling realization had her stomach fluttering with a peculiar thrill. Certainly, waking to such a handsome face every morn wouldn’t be horrible. Certainly, waking to such a handsome face every morn wouldn’t be horrible is tantalizing kisses-per his request. She recalled the many queries and worthless trinkets she’d sent Calin when she was a mere child. He must have thought her so foolish, much the same as her sisters. Regardless of the barbs her family had thrown at her, never once did her loyalty falter for her benefactor. Propped up on her elbow, she studied his lips-full, smooth, perfect.

Akira Neish has been raised as a peasant, her belly often empty and her family subject to the cruel whims of her clan's laird. I must also mention that Calin was what every hero should be, strong, loving, sensitive, sexy and hot. This was the first book i read of Kimberly's. She writes a story the way I most love to read.

First off I have to completely disagree with some reviewers who stated that the book was gory and had too much degradation of women and children in the beginning. Is the beginning a pleasant beginning, no it's sad and probably not as hope filled as other romance novels but in my opinion its more realistic.
Now don't get me wrong I love romance novels, especially ones with HEA (happy ever afters) but something that I can't always get past is when other reviewers get upset by the mere mention of any kind of harsh truths happening in novels that we know took place during times of hardship and war. Did rape, torture and the burning of witches really happen, yes. Did the author go into any kind of major detail in this book, NO! They made mentions of such things but nothing was ever elaborated, so it's not like you had to read first hand experience. I've read books like that and those are hard to get through, but this book was wonderful. The story line was interesting and kept me reading all day. The love they each had for the other and that they were fighting was one that you could poignantly feel. The heartache of loves lost and the joyous reunion were all a great way to end the book.

*SPOILERS*
The H and h were great together, neither giving an inch or backing down, they each had their flaws and they worked through them in the end. I loved how he had her mark branded on him and that in the end even though they lost a child they still had more to love that followed.

I don't even know where to begin with this one. From the beginning to the very end I couldn't stop reading it. This is one of those books that you keep saying, "I'll read just one more chapter then go to bed." The plot is fast paced and the romance so touching. Calin is so sweet, understanding, accepting, strong not to mention sexy and hot enough to burn the pages! And everything he does to ensure that Akira will be his, whether she thinks so or not, at times are laugh out loud funny! All of Killion's descriptions are exceptional and make you feel like you're there watching it all unfold before you! This is the first book I've read of hers and promise that it will not be the last.

Most highlander romances follow the same plot line with some minor variations. This books has some of the same elements I have come to love from highlander books, for example it has the travel where the pair resist one another then get to know each other and it's got the feisty female character who makes the man work for her. What is different in this book, and the reason I love it, is the violence, the suspense and the gore. A truly psychotic evil laird who gets his hands on two beautiful women makes for a great page turner.

It's beginning is pretty gory and the next few chapters were pretty dismal - think degradation of women and children. However, I still kept on reading though I felt pretty uncomfortable with what I was reading. I had to give up though as I just found the heroine pretty obnoxious and her conversation so inane. I just simply lost interest in the whole story.

I actually purchased and fell in love with this book a while ago, but I was looking at some of the other reviews on here and I just wanted to put my own review on this book's page because it is a truly well writen, and lovable book.

Calin is out for revenge and nothing will stop him, not even his beloved, Akira, and his secrets that revolve around her. Akira has been claimed by her lifelong benefactor and believes that her life and her family's fortune is starting to take a turn for the best. But secrets do not stay buried and soul mates are tested by extraordinary trials...

For starters, of course this plot has a lot of drama... why else would you read a book but to get lost in someone else's story? Akira is extremely feisty and yes, a bit much for a woman who would have come from this particular time. But really, how exciting is it to read about a sniveling door-mat? She jumps to the wrong conclusions and throws fits (all of which I was cheering her on for) but she is very loyal and compassionate and comical and I was very fond of her character. Did I sometimes wish that she had stopped while she was ahead? yes. But did work out for the best afterwards? of course. It is a romance, and a passionate one. (:

Calin, of course, says the wrong things (more than a few times and he has a whopper of a secret that everyone but Akira knows about) and there is an evil ex-mistress that would stop at nothing to ruin his future unless he comes crawling back. However, with all of these ands, I could not help but root for them the whole time and hope for their happy ending.

Also, the baddie in this book is so disgusting, vile, and evil that my gut was clenched with worry every time he got some face time and more of the "evil plan" was revealed. I wanted to see him punished accordingly (the violence here was well warranted) and all of the characters in this story happy in the end.

I cannot wait to, finally, get my hands on another story from this author.

I was thoroughly absorbed by this book. It held my attention right from the start and kept it all the way through. The story was riveting and had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. The romance was fantastic and the love scenes hot and steamy. I will be sure to read more of Kimberly Killion's books in the future

Really good story. Well written, it took me back to the time period. I felt lost in a world of highland warriors and lady's in need of rescuing. Spoiler..... It would have earned five stars if the mistress angle had been played up a bit more. I wish she would have tried to interfere with the H & h's life a bit more.
