From New York Times sports-reporter Berger (Blood Season: Tyson and the World of Boxing, 1989) comes a novel largely based on the life of the crooked Columbia University basketball player Jack Molinas. Like Jack Molinas, Jake Cardoza-six feet six, handsome, intelligent, charming and utterly amoral-grows up a Bronx schoolboy hero, attends Columbia (here Metro) University in the early 50's, and captains the team to a series of stunning victories.

Phil Berger (1942-2001) was a sportswriter, author, and screenwriter. Anything and everything on boxing by Phil Berger is worth spending money on. One of the very best, and is also much missed. He was a boxing reporter for the New York Times and wrote more than a dozen books.

Phil Bergerson’s book Shards of America explores the culture of the United States through an investigation of its streets. The resulting book is a unique look at the things that make up American society. In twenty years of road trips across America, Bergerson photographed window displays, everyday objects and street scenes in a formalistic, documentary style. TIME spoke with Bergerson as he is working on his second book, Sublime Encounters, to discuss his process and inspiration.
