James Tiptree, J. burst onto the science fiction scene in the late 1960s, either under the Tiptree pseudonym or another (Raccoona Sheldon), writing many award-winning short stories that explored the War Between the Sexes in terrifying and graphic terms. The book concludes with a satisfying coda from the alien reader/students. These three stories along with the novel "Brightness Falls From the Air" are lamentably the only "Riff" stories Tiptree/Sheldon wrote.

The Starry Rift book. Tiptree herself (James Tiptree Jr. being a pseudonym for Alice Sheldon) has been an author I've enjoyed several short stories of in the past, but at the same time, I felt like I haven't read enough. Moreover, she had quite a fascinating life. And, since we were coming up on what would have been her 100th birthday, when I saw this collection in a used book bin, I figured I'd give it a try.

James Tiptree, J. was actually Alice Hastings Bradley Sheldon (1915-1987), a fact she kept secret for the first ten years of her meteoric career under the Tiptree pseudonym, as she won awards and acclaim. The truth came out in 1977. She also wrote as Raccoona Sheldon. She was born in Chicago, but spent much of her childhood in Africa and India. Her father was a lawyer and traveler.
