The Native Informant & Other Stories is a collection of six short stories dealing with "unmentionable" aspects of Arab life in parts of the Arab world and in the West. Each narrative, whether set in the Arab world or in the West, provided me with new insight into the quest for an identity by many marginalized social elements in Arab countries. In this work, identity is not only conflicted but also fluid in nature.

Short stories in English broaching marginalized social issues in the Arab World. The Jatwa against Salman Rushdie has irrevocably clarified for the West the very real dangers that authors from within the Muslim world confront when they. The publication of Ramzi M. Salti's collection of short stories, The Native Informant: Six Tales of Defiance from the Arab World, breaks silence on yet another highly taboo subject in the Arab world: male homosexuality. Long dismissed as a corrupting influence from the West, the topic of male homosexuality in the Middle East has rarely been explored by authors from within the Arab and Islamic world.

Salti's collection of short stories, titled The Native Informant & Other Stories: Six Tales of Defiance from the Arab World was published in 1994 and received much acclaim in such periodicals as "World Literature Today," "The Digest of Middle East Studies," "Tat Tarbut," and "The LA Village View". It was also critically analyzed by Dr. Chris Wise in Ethnicity and the American Short Story (Ed. Julie Brown) in 1997 and spotlighted in a chapter in Wail S. Hassan's Immigrant Narratives: Orientalism and Cultural Translation in Arab American.

Then he heard other sounds. They came from the other old men. The men wore black, and they cried in their rooms. But is the world really sad?' said Sheherezade. Everybody has to laugh sometimes. The first old man took Salem into his room. I can tell you a funny story about a great man - oh, but it's too late.

The Native Informant & Other Stories is a collection of six short stories dealing with "unmentionable" aspects of Arab life in parts of the Arab world and in the West. Inspired by such modern writers as Alifa Rifaat, Nawal al-Sadawi, and Youssef Idris - authors who have, despite immeasurable odds, managed to emphasize subjects ranging from feminism to homosexuality in their works - these short stories attempt to further engage various social and political issues that remain, for the most part, largely ignored or silenced in modern Arabic literature. Most of the stories in The Native Informant & Other Stories operate on a dual level by addressing not only issues related to women, homosexuals, and victims of violence in southwest Asia, but also by examining the seemingly conflicting relationship between notions of Arabness, Islam, and the West. The collection thus aims at highlighting the plight of marginalized groups in Arab countries by broaching various issues on the social spectrum, ranging from religious intolerance, to the subjugation of women, to homophobia, to domestic violence, to Western and Eastern concepts of terrorism and neo/post coloniality, to the ethnic experience of being an Arab in the United States at a time when the media seems to be promulgating the negative stereotype of the Arab.

In a day and age when the words 'Middle East' carry so much weight it is nice to read material that enlightens the discerning reader about issues within Arab society that we are not aware of. Salti's collection of stories allows the reader an insight into some of the struggles and taboo's of Arab society. In many ways this makes an area of the world that may be 'foreign' to some, more tangible. This is the type of book that reminds us that we are all human and many differences between us are those that we create. This book should not only be read but it shold be experienced.

This book provides great insight into the daily life of people living in the Arab world. Each story is so unique and packed with meaning that the reader is left breathless. Salti's novel touches on the issues of gender equality, domestic violence, the minority experience, and everything in between. It is bound to touch the hearts of many.

Dr. Salti jumps right in with this collection of short stories that touch on some complicated and controversial topics: East/West, religion, nationalism, class structure, and human sexuality. Salti's characters give us a glimpse into the "why" behind the complexity and conflict, and show just how much nuance exists in an Arab world often painted as a homogeneous mono-culture by Western media.
