The most startling work here are excerpts from Nocturne, written during a convalescence in 1916 when an accident deprived D'Annunzio of sight for two months; the author's sensory explorations are intensified and made even more palpable.

Book by D'Annunzio, Gabrielle. The Virgin Orsola, something I read under the title of The Book of the Virgins, is one of the most haunting pieces of writing I have ever read, so much intensity is caught up in this short piece, a masterful writer.

Some of the poems in this book, in which D’Annunzio proclaims his sensuous, joyful feeling of communion with nature, are among the masterpieces of modern Italian poetry.

Apart from certain interesting autobiographical works such as Notturno (1921; published in Nocturne and Five Tales of Love and Death), D’Annunzio’s prose is somewhat tedious; he was too receptive of contemporary thought and style, so that his work was liable to indiscriminately reflect the influences of other writers. The same can be said of most of his plays, with the exception of La figlia di Iorio, which has powerful and vivid characterizations. Some of the poems in this book, in which D’Annunzio proclaims his sensuous, joyful feeling of communion with nature, are among the masterpieces of modern Italian poetry.

Prints 2 short stories, 3 novellas, and a "Nocturne" to establish D'Annunzio's claim to be a writer as well as a public figure

Very enjoyable translation of D'Annunzio. Hopefully the translator will translate further books. Nocturne is absolutely brilliant, but a couple of the other pieces are a bit dull, hence the 4 star rating instead of a 5.

This book is the first D'Annunzio I've read in English... Have read some of his poetry in Italian, which was pure music.

His writing style is intensely focused in a way I've not encountered elsewhere except in Coleridge. There is a certain seemingly surrealistic yet intensely condensed, focused, allusion-abundant quality to his writing style. Greatly enjoyed this work and hope to encounter more D'Annunzio in English.
