Exiled from Pixie and deprived of almost all her Pixie magic, Thistle Down had made a life for herself with the help of Desdemona “Dusty” Carrick and her brother Dick. But trouble was brewing among all the Pixie tribes, fueled by Haywood Wheatland, a half-Pixie/half-Faery, who was determined to seize control of The Ten Acre Wood for the Faeries. Thistle, Dick, Dusty, and her fiancé, Police Sergeant Chase Norton, thought the threat to Skene Falls and The Ten Acre Wood had ended with Haywood’s arrest, but they were wrong. The Pixie tribes were preparing for war, and only an inexperienced Pixie named Chicory was taking a stand. And even if he could convince Thistle and her new family to help him, it might already be too late.

"Chicory Up" by Irene Radford continues her `Pixie Chronicles' series which centers around the inhabitants of Skene Falls, including recently engaged Police Sergeant Chase Norton and Desdemona (Dusty) Carrick as they try to help the pixie tribe which is still in a upheaval. Thistle Down has been exiled from Pixie society by the king and is still in a human body but she has made a niche for herself checking on the elderly and handicapped even as her relationship blossoms with Dusty's brother Dick. Haywood Wheatland seems to be determined to destroy the happiness of everyone in revenge for his imprisonment and the pixie Chicory searches for a way to unite all of the discontented members of his tribe who are suffering. An indiscretion from Dick's past comes back to haunt him even as the elderly Mabel Gardiner loses her ability to rescue some of the lost souls who seek her aid but the bitter Phelma Jo displays unexpected talents as well as a surprising affinity toward Mabel's estranged nephew, Ian McEwen. Dusty and Dick's mother Juliet is blithely planning a formal wedding for her shy daughter whose misery increases exponentially with each new proposal for the ceremony. It may not be possible to experience true happiness in Skene Falls, particularly if Haywood has his way.

An imaginative light read that explores the differences between Pixies and Faeries as they grapple for territory amongst mostly oblivious humans. It would be helpful to have some familiarity with the first book in the series, `Thistle Down', in order to understand some of the complex interrelationships. There are still a few too many entanglements being superficially touched upon and some of the characters seem to act a bit illogically so this story can be a bit challenging to interpret. This work is slightly better than the first in the series but still not quite representative of Ms Radford's normally fascinating tales.

Pixies are alive and well with a tribe residing in Ten Acre Wood. Many of the nearby human townsfolk of Skene Falls know Pixies exist and are responsible for their beautiful gardens. The Pixies banished Thistle Down from their community and soon afterward a magical spell changed her into a human. She and Dick Carrick fell in love and will marry as soon as a judge issues Thistle a birth certificate.

While the couple waits, there is trouble amongst the Pixies as the tribes are at war against each other egged on by the magic of the fairies who still want possession of Ten Acres Wood that hybrid Haywood Wheatland failed to obtain for them (see Thistle Down). Though young and inexperienced, Chicory knows a civil war will lead to the destruction of the Pixies replaced in the woods by the fairies. He and his followers form their own tribe living in the attic of Dick's mother. Thistle Down returns to Pixie to end the belligerency, abate the out of control energy, and insure a new king is selected. Dick fears he is losing his beloved so he turns in to a Pixie due to Chicory's magic. He enters the fray to insure Thistle Down's back is covered.

Human or pixie, Thistle Down is a wise conscientious person who fulfills her obligations by going the extra kilometers. The Pixies bring plenty of amusing havoc unless you happen to be the human whose life is disrupted by the mischievous tribe. Filled with magic, intrigue and romance, readers will enjoy the latest entertaining lighthearted Pixie Chronicles woodland fantasy. Irene Radford is one of my favorite authors.
