Juni 1979 an einem Schlaganfall im Krankenhaus in Celle. Er wuchs in Hamburg auf. Nach dem Tod des Vaters 1928 zog die Mutter mit ihm und seiner älteren Schwester nach Lauban in Schlesien. Arno Schmidt absolvierte das Abitur und arbeitete von 1934 an in der Textilindustrie in Greiffenberg, wo er auch Alice Murawski heiratete.
