Donald Finkel was born in 1929 in New York City and died at his home in St. Louis in 2008. Like many of Finkel’s long poems, the book is frequently described as a kind of epic, and joins his other works on the subject, Endurance: An Antarctic Idyll Going Under. Finkel has also written about the Des Peres River near St. Louis, describing his fascination with things that other people turn their heads away from, in an interview with Catherine Rankovic. Not So the Chairs: New and Selected Poems, Mid-List Press (Minneapolis, MN), 2003.
In lines electrified with lyricism and wit, Donald Finkel carves a clearing out of the backyard brush and the intellectual brambles of existence.
A Question of Seeing book. He delights in naming weeds and towering trees, cars and streets. Yet, in each poem, there is a constant tension between the actual wind and the words we must use to convey the wind's force.

Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. The result is a fine collection of poems. Finkel combines a strong narrative voice and an obvious grasp of the craft of poetry with compelling subject matter, and the book is a success. At the very least, it should provoke the reader into wanting to read Tomalin and Hall's The Strange Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst (now considered a Modern Classic).

BooksDonald Finkel, 79, Poet of Free-Ranging Styles, Is Dead. Mr. Finkel’s work could be mordantly comic and was often of epic length; a single poem could fill an entire volume. There was little high-flown abstraction in his poetry, and little lofty diction. Byrd, Franz Kafka and Lenny Bruce. The net effect was a multilayered, sculptural bricolage through which Mr. Finkel expanded the reader’s sense of what was possible in the genre.

A Question of Seeing. Once again Finkel is daring in his choice of subject, for this book is a series of seven long poems about Antarctica. Finkel spent a month on the continent in 1969, and his experiences form the basis of some of the sections. Other parts have as a narrative frame the explorations of Amundsen, Byrd, and others. As usual, Finkel interpolates prose passages from various authors, but here the practice is more tightly focused than previously.
