John Piper is one of those guys whom God has uniquely outfitted with the ability to understand biblical truth and then articulate it in a clear, understandable, creative, and weighty manner. We see this in his preaching and writing ministry. But this gifting also takes another shape.

This is a most enjoyable read. I am lying awake. I just had cancer surgery. And I ran across the book of Ruth: under the wings of God. I all ready loved the story but author John Piper made me feel that each character I the story engaged in the plan of God had significance. I believe this myself. Thus, the book was so encouraging to me. Dr. Sharon mitchell Wooten

JOHN PIPER IS A VERY TALENTED RELIGIOUS POETRY, THEOLOGICAN !!!

THIS BOOK IS AN EXCELLENT POETIC PROTRAIT OF THE BIBLICAL "RUTH", BOAZ & NAOMI.

IT HAS BECOME A VALUABLE ADDITION IN MY PERSONAL LIBRARY, JUST AS JOHN PIPER'S RELIGIOUS POETRY ON THE BOOK OF "JOB" HAS BECOME !!!

I didn't know anything about this author, so I didn't know the whole book was one long poem. Not my cup of tea.
I read The Innkeeper recently and was so moved by it, that I decided to read this one on Ruth as well. It did not disappoint.

I'm not sure if the poetry is "great" poetry. I haven't read enough poetry to know what defines "good" and "great." There has been serious poetic effort put into this, and it is obvious, just from a technical structural standpoint. This is one aspect of what makes it enjoyable. Another is the creativity behind the narrative. Imagine David as a boy, asking his grandfather Obed to tell him about "great-grandma-Ruth," with the poem climaxing with old, blind, and crippled Boaz telling the story himself. The third ingredient is John Piper's eye for the glories of God's redemptive history, and how it is revealed in all the details of His peoples' history. Piper sees big sweeping themes in tiny details, and expresses them in rhyme form. The sum total is treat for the mind and the soul. My appetite is whet for A Sweet and Bitter Providence: Sex, Race, and the Sovereignty of God.

Highly recommended.
