The British are a hardy island people. At least two aspects of this. If you like cataclysmic novels John Bowen;s AFTER THE RAIN is as exciting as any deluge you can hope to find: but if you The British are a hardy island people. At least two aspects of this country are world-renowned-the astonishing number of high calibre writers they produce, and their climate. AFTER THE RAIN is an inpressive combination of both. In fact, Angus Wilson says

For my. Mother and father. There are no beginnings in history; all that belongs to pre-history and imagination.

For my. Inky pinky spider, climbing up the spout, Down came the rain, and washed poor spider out. Out came the sun, and dried away the rain. Inky pinky spider, climbing up again. Children’s nursery rhyme. Chains of events and ideas stretch backwards and forwards through time, and can be traced in either direction by people who have a fancy for that sort of thing, but traced to no beginnings, and each end is a different question mark.

After the Rain is a play by John Griffith Bowen, based on his 1958 novel about a 200-year flood. The action takes place in a university lecture hall two centuries after a massive rainfall. The play's first English staging was at the Hampstead Theatre in 1966, and was notable for involving the audience in the action of the play by situating them as students in a lecture hall.

Most of the pages in the earlier volumes were blank, the occasional entries brief: Thunder today, or Trouble with sharks. the log was written up every evening after supper. And the rest of us, although we had lost the sense of time and date before, could now tell Tuesday from Thursday again, and twelve from tw. t was on the morning of the 26th of June 1966, that the tempest struck. Something had made me remember the season.

Similar to what James Livingston said, I read this book when I was much younger. (45 years ago seems in the ball park.) The thought that comes to me that with global warming and coasts vanishing, the story is staring to come true in a strange way. I will refer to the work of Orrin Pilkey of Duke University.
