Both these great men, though they differ in method, are the substance of the Chinese conscious ness, the race-mold or type; they have left their mark upon their people. They were illumined men, lighted with the spirit to see and do right. They had the power to make clear the path for others; they went about introducing the noble thoughts that lead to the higher life, and they inspired true confidence by practicing what they preached.

The Book of Proverbs is the second book of the third section (called Writings) of the Hebrew Bible and a book of the Christian Old Testament. When translated into Greek and Latin, the title took on different forms: in the Greek Septuagint (LXX) it became Παροιμίαι Paroimiai ("Proverbs"); in the Latin Vulgate the title was Proverbia, from which the English name is derived.

I assume this book was a scanned version of the original (and I remember when the original was released) as there are no pictures and many misprints. The misprints are a little disconcerting but the content of what the author Mr. Brown presents is understandable. If you enjoy reading about Oriental philosophy to continue to understand the culture and mind-set, this is worth struggling thru, make the corrections and re-read it. It was an enjoyable adventure in my opinion to read.

Great compilation of priceless, hard-to-find wisdom.

I've read other books of Chinese proverbs and idioms. However, this one is the best written yet. Others have seemed confusing and clunky. This one, written in 1938, is easy to understand and much more clear. It includes, not just Confucius, but Mencius, Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu, Yu Tse, Yang Chu, Kang-Hsi and Kuan-yi-wu. There are also Chinese poetry, proverbs and Moral Maxims. All are definitely food for thought. I highly recommend this book!
