I don’t know how long I’d sat there, but it was now up into the wee hours of the morning, long enough to put a crick in my neck from leaning against the chair wing. It was past time to be in bed, and. I wondered why Sam hadn’t missed me and come looking to see where I was. Well, some people can put aside worries and sleep like babies, but it doesn’t work that way with me. Carefully placing the screen in front of the fire, I tiptoed back into the bedroom and eased into bed so as not to disturb his rest.

Miss Julia and her many zany predicaments are made even more hilarious by the strong performance of Cynthia Darlow. Darlow has the impressive ability to impersonate the characters of a young boy, a high-strung elderly woman, a calm, mild-mannered old man, and many others. Miss Julia's main concern in this book is trying to prove the paternity of Little Lloyd, the young boy living in her house who has won her heart. Author Ann Ross has cleverly woven this story of mishaps, misunderstandings, and just plain craziness with tongue-in-cheek humor.

Miss Julia Stands Her Groundfinds our steel magnolia looking forward to many peaceful and happy years with her new husband, Sam. If you haven't read them start with the first book because they build on her life and the life of her family. It starts with the arrival on her doorstep of the illegitimate son of her deceased husband.

Don't miss Ann Ross's latest, Miss Julia Raises the Roof, coming April 2018 from Viking. Miss Julia has charmed and captivated fans of humorous Southern tales through six rollicking novels, and now, in Miss Julia Stands Her Ground, she faces her most daunting challenge yet. Hazel Marie’s troublemaking uncle, Brother Vernon Puckett, has just swept into town and questioned Little Lloyd’s paternity. Suddenly Miss Julia’s late husband’s estate is up for grabs, and it’s up to her to prove that the boy’s claim is legitimate

Popular author Ann B. Ross' fan base grows with the publication of each novel in her Miss Julia series, which has cracked the New York Times extended best-seller list. In this episode, the graceful Southern lady's impeccable manners are pushed to the brink. When she learned her philandering (and late) husband left behind a lover and illegitimate son, Miss Julia could have gotten nasty. Instead, she kept her cool, adding Hazel Marie and Little Lloyd to her makeshift family. But now rumors are surfacing that call Little Lloyd's patrilineage into question. Has Miss Julia been duped? The only way to know for sure might be to exhume Wesley Lloyd Springer's body for a DNA test. Fresh, funny, and full of Southern charm, Miss Julia Stands Her Ground is as appealing as a cold glass of lemonade and an empty rocking chair in the shade.

I have been a long-time fan of the Miss Julia series. This one was another winner. It offers a look back to when Little Lloyd first came to stay with Miss Julia and the evolution of her fondness for him, his mother, and Sam. If you like the other Miss Julia books, you'll like this one, too.

One thing I missed were the unique comments that Miss Julia would make to herself in her train of thought that are often ironic and comedic. There weren't as many of them in this book.

I did not give this book 5 stars because when I re-read the first book after reading this one, it seems that some of the thoughts of Miss Julia just aren't in sync with the first book. If I recall correctly, at the end of the first book, she is already developing quite a fondness for Little Lloyd, but in "Miss Julia Stands Her Ground" the fondness doesn't really begin to happen until Christmas time. Up until then, she is still rather cold, but unfailingly polite (of course). So in my eyes, the time line is a little off.

This is a great, light-hearted book that makes for a very relaxing read. Make yourself some sweet tea and enjoy!

Miss Julia stands her ground is the latest edition in the Miss Julia series. I listened to the unabridged audio edition and found it a pleasant but unchallenging listen.

When Hazel-Marie's devious cousin Brother Verne comes to town with allegation that "Little" Lloyd is not Wesley Lloyd's legitimate son, Miss Julia struggles to deal with the ramifications of this malicious accusation, as well as to deal with her troubled past as wife to the town's most miserly citizen.

While I found parts of Miss Julia Stands Her Ground, enjoyable, there were parts I just didn't care for. Namely, I really don't like Sam Murdoch, Miss Julia's second husband. Its not that the man isn't nice, or a likeable guy. Its just that Sam really doesn't add anything to the story. I hate to say it, but the character is jus plain boring. Miss Julia was much funnier when she was sassy and single and tearing around town with Lillian and Hazel-Marie. Sam just adds nothing to the story and I get so tired of hearing him say, "Now Julia..." Bleh...

Second, there is a huge flashback in the center of the story. In the audio edition, its difficult to tell that this is actually a flashback. I kept wondering why she was talking about Hazel-Marie like she was a perfect stranger, and why Miss Julia kept obsessing about Wesley Lloyd. It was bad enough to have a long flashback, but to add a huge section about Sam Murdoch in the flashback was irksome. Enough about Sam. Please.

3 Stars. An average read. The flashback was too long, and didn't add much to the story, except to enforce how awful Wesley Lloyd was. If he was so bad, I don't see why someone as strong willed as Julia stayed with him. I pray in the next story Sam goes to Alaska for a vacation. A very LONG vacation.

When I read about Miss Julia, I feel as though I am back in my old home town in Oklahoma with a population of 250! I knew a couple of ladies just like her. The writing makes me laugh out loud and the characters have become old friends. I've read several of these books now. If you want serious writing to make you think---this is not it. If you want something fun to read between those serious, thought provoking books---these are the ones!

I thoroughly enjoyed this Miss Julia book as I have all the books about this fictional lady from N.C. that most of us wish we could spend time with ;)
Having met the author when she came to Charlotte for a book signing
I can understand why Miss Julie is such a wonderful character.
Ann Ross is a NC. native and is truly writing "what she knows"
Enjoyed so much meeting her and also the emails she's been kind enough
to respond to.
If you want some fun reading, this is a book that won't disappoint you

When the Mitford series ended, I was at a loss, but Amazon recommended the Miss Julia Series. What a delight! If you're familiar with Father Tim and Cynthia from Mitford, NC, you will soon see how the antics and situations of Miss Julia compare. Page after page you will find yourself either laughing out loud or sniffling into your Kleenex. Miss Julia Stands Her Ground is only one of many excellent books about the loveable and sometimes unpredictable Miss Julia. I have read 4 or 5 of these books and have loved every one. So if you're up for a rollicking yet heart-warming story about a 60-ish year old whipper snapper of a lady, then pick up the first book in the series, "Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind." You'll fall in love with her and then work your way up to Miss Julia Stands Her Ground.

Loved this book. Ann Ross uses Flash Back to further develop the characters and explains Miss Julia's devotion to the bastard child of her late husband and yet in a humorous way. Each one of her books in the series gets better and better. Looking forward to reading the next one.
