Very touching! War requires much sacrifice and hardship. Let us always, always honor those who have served and fought for us. Most current poets in this collection fought in WWI and WWII - some gave their lives... along with their poems. The poetry expressed a full range of emotions: pride, compassion, courage, bitterness, anger, anguish, even laughter. Regardless of how the combatants felt, none quit. Let us all be grateful and salute them for their dedication.
The collection covers the Classics excerpts, the U.S. Revolution, the U.S. Civil War, the two World Wars and after.

I wish I could share this collection with every soldier. Reading these poems stirred emotions in me that I don't have the ability to self-express, but in reading I find reflection, recognition and even understanding. With more than one hundred of the most memorable poems ever penned I cannot imagine that this will not also be true for every soldier fortunate enough to explore these pages.

I last purchased this in January of 2010 and paid $4.98. Shipping & Handling added another $3.99 to my order total

The poetry is pretty good, too. I like this format very much. likely will get more of these books. As for the poetry, it is selected for its quality and not for the political positions it may take. One need not be a war-monger or a peace-monger to enjoy it. One need only appreciate good poetry.

I thoroughly enjoyed thumbing through this volume the first time... it has a lot of good poems and a few that I found particularly moving, such as Farewell to Arms and The War in Heaven. This is a good book for any Soldier to have.

John Hollander has selected one- hundred and fifteen poems of war to include in this Anthology. As he points out in his instructive introduction these poems express varied and contradictory attitudes and moods toward War and those who fight in it. There are poems which celebrate heroism and those which are angry at the whole enterprise. There is much description of the gore and sorrow of war and there is too much lament and elegy. Many of the poems will be recognizable to most readers, poems like 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic' or 'Concord Bridge' or 'Mademoiselle from Armentiers' The anthology contains poems which are among the greatest in world literature' from 'David's Lament for Jonathan' to Yeats poem on the Death of an Irish Airman'
'War' is the most horrifying frightening and intense of collective human experiences. But it is also at times the place where the supreme human capacity for courage sacrifice and even kindness is expressed.
This Anthology contains expressions of both the glory and the horror.

This anthology has something for every poetic taste. From the epic heroism of The Iliad , to the sorrowing irony of " After Blenham ", to the heart stopping horror of " The Death of The Ball Turret Gunner ". There are 115 poems witten by soldiers , poets , authors ; both famous and obscure. Thoughtfully edited in a way to ultimately frame a fine tribute to the soldier across the ages. An interest in military history could be helpful for the sake of context ,although the strength of the collection is not in the history , but in the humanity.

Good survey of the poetic reaction to war from the Illiad to Wallace Stevens.
