Reconstructing Childhood : Strategies of Reading for Culture and Gender in the Spanish American Bildungsroman. by Julia A. Kushigian. This study argues for a critique of the grand narrative of coming of age, the Bildungsroman, which advocates the cultivating, making, and molding of the self in its youthful development. Its objective is to propose paradigms bassed primarily on a reconfigured examinatin of gender and culture as more satisfying and humanizing formational markers for development than the more common ical approach to the coming of age.
