The Eweretta and her captain had proved their worth. The sails were loosed again and they were soon making good speed up the Channel. The galley must have been working again, too, for soon tea and bowls of porridge appeared for anyone who wanted them. Hal and Simon both lectured Jancy on going out in the storm, but she knew Simon didn’t truly regret it. Who could ever regret such a moment, such a kiss?

Jo Beverley was born on September 22, 1947 in Lancashire, England. She received a degree in English history from Keele University in Staffordshire in 1970. In the mid-1970s, she moved to Canada with her husband. She wrote over 30 historical romance novels during her lifetime including Lord Wraybourne's Betrothed, The Stolen Bride, The Shattered Rose, Lord of Midnight, and Forbidden Magic. She also wrote several series including the Company of Rogues series and the Malloren series.
After years living in the new world of Canada, Simon St. Bride is ready to return to aristocratic life in England. One can begin the Company of Rogues series with this book, even though it is the second-to-last tale, because it is not directly connected to the European goings-on of the time, as the other books are. Nevertheless, I recommend beginning, as they say, at the beginning, with Beverley's "An Arranged Marriage" (a much darker tale) and moving forward from there. Still, although a bit richer when read in context, this novel stands alone quite well.
