From Library Journal. Bauld gives entertaining and thought-provoking methods of accomplishing the task. I bought this book thinking it would just be about the nuts-and-bolts of writing the college essay. The book does thoroughly cover this topic, however it's real value for the money is the insight and jolt of reality it provides into the process of admission from the point of view of the admissions staff.

Writing your college essay can be very nerve racking and can be hard to start. Though this book is obviously written with the college bound student in mind, there were some universal advice and insight on essay writing that I found absolutely wonderful. Bauld's book gives students the initial spark to begin writing and guides them to the successful track. He does this by providing examples of previous essays and showing certain strengths and weaknesses in each. I really enjoyed this book, especially the chapter on re-writing. I recommend this book for essay writers and students alike.

Bauld Prior to reading this book, I understood little to moderate about college essays. I already knew that your essay should somewhat be a narrative and you should show your story, not tell. A more interesting beginning would start with a "shocker" or a paradox. Overall I think this book is helpful because it enhanced my understanding of how to write a compelling college essay. I learned to focus on a single subject and narrow that down.

Two things to do before writing college essays 1. White, "is an act of faith, not a trick of grammar. It's not any kind of trick at all, in fact. Your writing is your way of seeing and of thinking. How an essay really works: it shows you at your alive and thinking best, a person worth listening to-not just for the ten minutes it takes to read your application, but for the next four years.

On Writing the College Application Essay : The Key to Acceptance and the College of Your Choice. This is not only the best book on writing the college application essay, but one of the best books about writing, period. With amazingly fresh and funny examples throughout, it shows how bored admissions officers are by the pompous, self-congratulatory essays that students often think they're supposed to write-and how those students can do much, much better. It literally changed my daughter's life, not only because she got into the very competitive college of her choice, but because she now is a sharper, more interesting writer.

Vital information for every college applicant. A former Ivy League admissions officer provides tough and funny advice on coming up with the best essay possible. The Key to Acceptance at the College of Your Choice. One of the most stressful aspects of the college application process is the essay. Most students worry about what an admissions officer looks for in a writing sample. But that’s the wrong way to approach this vital component, says former college admissions officer Harry Bauld. At Brown and Columbia, he saw what prospective students often did wrong-and now tells you how to do it right.

A newly revised edition of a perennial favorite, On Writing the College Application Essay by Harry Bauld—formerly an admissions officer at Brown University and assistant director of admissions at Columbia University—is an insider’s guide to writing a college application essay that will stand out from the pack.

I don't normally write reviews for books, but this book is so good at its purpose--to help people become better writers. Before vague, my writing is now leagues clearer. I did not think my writing would improve very much, yet this book has pointed out serious issues I suffer with my writing. Writing for AP classes in high school relies on assertions and facts to support it. However, when writing about oneself in the personal statement or any other point in one's life, this book offers a plethora of tips to give your writing a facelift. I bought this book for the Personal Statement. It definitely helped me write essays I would not have been able to write before reading the book.
Another great thing about this book are the examples. There are so many examples!! There are student personal statement examples and vivid examples from famous writers.
I do not know which colleges I have gotten into yet, but this book has helped my writing move forward when I did not think it possible.

This is, hands down, the single most important factor for my admission to the school I am at now, Swarthmore College. Pretty good SATs (>2300) might also have really helped, but my grades sucked. I credit my essay with tipping my app towards that fat acceptance letter.

I'm not a humanities guy. I'm really into math and science. I like to think I have really good ideas, but suck a lot at getting them expressed concretely onto paper. Yet, this book helped me ground all the swirling thoughts in my head into one short page, 1000 words. It may have been published in 1978, but it's still 100% relevant in today's college environment. It's funny, filled with examples, and quite a joy to read. Even now, I'm getting it as a gift for some rising high school seniors as they embark on their undergrad app journey.

Highly recommend. Love this book.

This book is very well-written and provides a wealth of information about college essays. It is not so much a roadmap to writing the college essay, but rather a very insightful overview of general points that admissions staff look for in these essays. We found it a useful read in conjunction with a more pragmatic guide to writing the essay.

Hands-down the best guide on essay writing and other aspects of applying to selective colleges. This is the only guide book that my son read voluntarily (brilliantly written; well-structured; nice dosis of humor and sarcasm). Where do you find high quality advise that is entertaining? Life saver for this year's application cycle!

This is a great book to give insight into what a great college essay looks like. The college essay is the place where you are able to show admission officers a glimpse into your personality and allow you to stand out from the thousand of other perfect candidates.

this book will tell you everything you need to know, in very direct language, about what you need to do to write a good essay on an application to a competitive college. the problem is that the author will leave you infuriated at what a sleaze bag, crap shoot the whole college admisssions process has become. the chapter that describes a fictious late night conversation between two admissions officers will make your skin crawl. if admissions people are so burned out and bored with reading applications with less than brilliant essays then i suggest they find another line of work. however, the book is well written, humorous at times and filled with absolutely essential information for kids trying to get into competitive colleges. so, just keep repeating to yourself that knowledge is power and most of the time the truth really hurts.

I got this book a year ago as a transfer student from a community college. I applied to a top college in US and with the tips from this book I got accepted yesterday!

This book is easy to read and is great whether you're going straight from high school or transferring from another college.

Bauld is a former admissions officer who really knows what he's talking about. I actually enjoyed reading this book because he is truly a great writer himself.

A+ tips for writing your personal statement and/or essay writing in general!
What a great book. I can't believe I'm reading about the college application process and laughing out loud. Just buy it. And read it in an afternoon.
