For thirty-seven year old Tandi Crawford, the past is a double-edged sword

Arnell Rayford's mother, Esther, is where she's always wanted to be. Ensconced in the mansion where her own mother once worked as a housekeeper, she runs a thriving business that's surely making the previous owner turn in her grave. While some may call Esther's live-in employees prostitutes, she prefers to call them ladies of charm-or tenants. For thirty-seven year old Tandi Crawford, the past is a double-edged sword. On one side is the agonizing mystery of her mother's early death and her father's brutal indifference.

Breathe a lie, live a lie. That's what Nadirah Lewis learns when she uncovers the stunning lie she was forced to live for seventeen years. Nadirah was twelve years old when she was blamed for crippling her Aunt Stephanie. Guilt and her trust fund kept Nadirah a prisoner in Stephanie's home and the object of Stephanie's cruel tongue, but it took another vicious lie and a threat to Nadirah's career as a teacher to infuse her with the energy to fight back.

Nadirah's fight, however, is not just for herself. It is also for one of her young students, Bree Morrison. When Bree is hospitalized after drinking a near fatal dose of poison, Nadirah petitions the Administration for Child Services for guardianship. Bree's mother has inexplicably disappeared, and what Bree won't say is what Nadirah needs to hear before Bree's aunt Erma, a she-devil on wheels, wins the custody battle.

Erma, the soon-to-be ex-wife of Austin Gray, Nadirah's handsome new landlord, and close friend of Lynn, Nadirah's cousin, lets Nadirah know in no uncertain terms that she will never get Bree or her husband. But what unforgivable lie does Erma live that could stop her cold yet devastate all around her?

And Lynn, as well put together and as orderly as her life is, what shameful lie lurks behind her picturesque suburban doors?

While the revelation of many of the lies give Nadirah the courage to find herself, she must accept the fact that those same lies may well destroy the lives of those closest to her. Unveil the shocking, real life truths of Living, Breathing Lies.

This was my first Gloria Mallette novel but def not my last. This book illustrates the impact secrets and lies that are kept secret have on families from one generation to the next. Stephanie, marries Lester who she thought was the man of her dreams, after finding out a terrible secret. She harbors this secret for years out of fear of being poor again but it affects her relationship with her children (Lynn and Les) and the child she is raising from her deceased brother, Nadirah. After being held captive by Stephanies lies for year Nadirah finally moves out and grows into the woman she should have been if it had not been for the years of emotional abuse she endured. There was so many twists and turns in this novel, it was drama filled, but the story was extremely well written. I wish I had discovered this author sooner. Be careful of the secrets you might become one living breathing lie.
Nadirah Lewis, parents dieds in and accident and leaves there little girl alone to be raise by her aunt stephanie and uncle Les.Her aunt stephaine was a hell from aunt and evryone have one in there live but this one was cruel to her and her own kids, when her uncle les get killed in a fire that leaves nadirah alone, her aunt stephaine gos to work and what a hell of a ride nadirah takes, she is a prisoner in that house when her aunt falls down the steps and the lies start to happen, but when nadirah cousin lynn come into her life things start to happen and she leave the house of hell to be come a teacher and a foster mother to Bree Morrision and thats when the pages start to tune. Ms. Mallette does it again a page tuner that make you thing about the lies people tell and how they can come back to hunt you.
Couldn't put the book down. So many twist and turns in this book. Leaves you breathless. Recommend that anyone with issues with family member read this book. Everyone can identify with someone like the characters in this book. I"m a faithful reader of Gloria Malette writting. I'm a member of a bookclub in Brooklyn called SISTER WELL READ (shout out) that reviewed this book and it was well recieved. All I have to say is keep up the good work. Her books keep getting better and better. .
As usual, I can depend on Ms. Mallett to deliver a cutting edge story. This was no different, however, I was so terribly disappointed with the amount of typos, grammatical and punctuational errors in this book that it took longer to read than ususal. I also noticed that she is with a different publisher and I wonder if that's the reason. Whatever the problem, I hope its rectified, because again, Gloria is on my list of "can't wait for the next book" authors and I truly have withdrawals waiting.
It was very poorly written and very predictable, with no clever twists. Not a good read!
I have been a fan since the first novel by this author. I could literally read her books in one day if I had none other to do. I pray that Ms Gloria continues to bless us with her writing.
This book was definitely a page turner. I would have loved to share this book with my bookclub, but there were just too many typos. I might consider "What's Done In The Dark" instead.
A page turner. Gloria Mallette has yet to disappoint me. You will be glad you bought this book.
