Gustave Flaubert, Andrew Brown (Translator). Memoirs of a Madman is a reading that can give you an outside look on all your juvenile smugness and folly, so it's a perfect book for teens. Germaine Greer warns us in her forward that we shouldn't be mining this youthful adventure for psychoanalytic details. And yet she cannot resist herself, sort of like we men cannot our sexual fantasies: "A woman enjoyed is a goddess destroyed," she says, as if spreading the news. Old folks might not get it, because they have a tendency to forget what it's like to be young, confused and disenchanted.

Bought this book as part of a critical paper I was writing and I absolutely loved it. Read it in one night and completely connected to Flaubert. Would definitely recommend to anyone who already likes Flaubert's works or would like to start.

The beginning of the book was written when Gustave Flaubert was young enough to be antagonistic to men and the things they do. He recognized that the influence words had on him were symptoms of a madness that would be far more meaningful to him than any social construction of reality like a religion, party, or ideology would pretend to be. This is like a song on the Timbuk 3 album Big Shot In The Dark about: you had it right the first time.

Lord, if only I had been able to write like this at that age. This is a really amusing and quick paced memoir of an infatuated teen. Flaubert perfectly captures that obsessiveness of infatuation and young love. His description of the beach alone is worth the read. Plus, the edition is handsome and well put together.
