Eugene Stovall's novel Blood and Brotherhood is a African American historical novel set in the 1920's. Hero Pete Jenkins returns from the World War I and finds himself caught up in the politics of the era where African Americans fight discrimination and search for answers to how to obtain equal rights without destroying their community. Eugene creates a setting based on historical events from the 1920's including the race riots that destroyed the Greenwood District of Tulsa, OK, lynchings and Marcus Garvey's attempt to help African American's return to Africa and other heartbreaking events in American history.

Pete Jenkins problems are immediately apparent. He's barely making enough to live on when he meets the woman of his dreams, the selfish and beautiful Julia Duncan. Julia is embroiled in an affair with his buddy Grady who has set him up with her in order to spy on Garvey's African Legion, an organization that Pete supports wholeheartedly. Every time Julia and Pete nearly get together, Julia's desire to escape Harlem leads her astray. Pete works his way up the hierarchy of the African Legion, improving his status in life while the Ku Klux Klan becomes increasingly active in attacking African Americans. Will Grady betray Pete? Will Julia and Pete get together? Will Pete's efforts to aid African civil rights bear fruit? Will Julia learn to value what Pete stands for? The characters slowly develop into people readers care about.

Eugene Stovall creates a fantasy political rationale for how the events came into play, while portraying historical events with attention to detail. Overall, this book provides an interesting peek into the times and never a dull moment as events unwind.

First off, I have to say that this is one long book - it has alot of things to say! I am Canadian, so I am always interested in anything that has to do with US history and I have to say that Eugene Stovall's book was extremely, extremely interesting and well researched.

Stovall takes a look at the historical significance of the social and political ramifications of the past - mixing characters that range from black soldiers to those involved in the Civil Rights Movements.

There is a strong message of "stand up for yourself" and "be true to yourself" but, as I mentioned while the storyline (novel) was interesting, what really fascinated me was the thorough historical research done here - this book could easily double up as a history book.

I liked the strong writing and the mixute of characters, this was a very interesting book.

Blood and Brotherhood is a novel by Eugene Stovall. It's about Pete Jenkins a World War I veteran. It also covers the discrimination of the era against African Americans, and all that went along with it. Pete gets involved with Julia who is selfish, gorgeous, and wants out of Harlem. It is during the time of the Klu Klux Klan, and their attacks on African Americans. Pete was very involved with the African Legion, and his friend Grady wants to know what the African Legion is up to. Does he betray Pete? Are Pete, and Julia happy together or does Julia leave him, and Harlem? This book provides a look into history along with a look at one black mans life.

Blood and Brotherhood really sheds some light on the events that took place during the Civil Rights movement. The story names some pretty powerful people like Thurgood Marshall, Marcus Garvey, and Rosa Parks and their contribution to history. I am a free thinking so I don't believe everything that was printed in a history book. I was introduced to Irene Morgan and the part she played in the Civil Rights movement. I really enjoyed the book and learned more about life before the Civil Rights movement.
