Richard Sears grew up in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and moved to London, England, in the late 1970s. He earned degrees in psychology and literature and for many years worked as a psychiatric counselor before pursuing a career in investigative journalism.

Richard Warren Sears (December 7, 1863 – September 28, 1914) was an American manager, businessman and the founder of Sears, Roebuck and Company with his partner Alvah Curtis Roebuck. Sears was born in Stewartville, Minnesota. His father was James Warren Sears, born circa 1828 in New York, a blacksmith and wagon-maker; his mother was Eliza Burton, born in Ohio circa 1843
