This book reminds me why I love Historical Romance: a little mystery, a lot of banter, a lot of humorous charm and a passionate romance.

Lady Gabrielle is the beautiful, kind and `good' eldest daughter of a Duke. She was prepared to enter the marriage her father arranged for her until one night a week before the wedding when she witnessed her fiancé in a passionate kiss with another woman. Gabrielle goes for a walk in the park with her faithful, elderly mastiff, Brutus, and runs into a handsome man who is walking a little Pomeranian type dog.

She recognizes that this man, Lord Brentwood, is kind and courteous. He is willing to walk his mother's small dog, Prissy, at early hours of the morning and he expresses concern for her welfare in walking alone in the park. She also realizes that this is the first time she has been drawn to a man and on a sudden impulse she kisses him. Brent gets lost in the kiss from this beauty of the mist until the angry voice of the Duke/father challenges him. With the Duke is another gentleman who turns out to be the father of the man that Lady Gabrielle is affianced to. In the resulting confusion, Prissy disappears.

By the end of the day Brent finds himself coerced into agreeing to marry Lady Gabrielle. Brent is 30 years old and had been contemplating finding a suitable wife. Although unhappy about being used, Brent determines that Lady Gabrielle may suit him just fine.

Gabrielle on the other hand has had quite enough of men determining her choices. She doesn't want to be forced into marriage and she had not intended to trap Brentwood. It is quite fun to read all of the things Gabrielle tries to convince him that she would make a terrible wife. While their conflict continues they try to locate Prissy and some other small dogs who are suddenly going missing.

I felt the story fell short in resolving two areas. The elopement of Gabrielle's ex-fiancé did not really make sense considering the attitude he expressed toward women. Also, the author missed a perfect opportunity in the end to correct Gabrielle's fun misunderstanding of "golden orbs." Nonetheless, I completely enjoyed the romance that developed between Gabrielle and Brent and I enjoyed the mystery involving the dogs. This is a fast read with a heart for dogs and a lot of charm.

I liked this book. It is your typical historical romance & all that good stuff. -- Brentwood is a gem & I loved his character. Also, him & Gabrielle compliment each other well. -- I kept thinking as I was reading that they were just so cute together.

If I had any complaints, I'd say that Gabrielle should have told her sister she didn't appreciate her attitude a time or two. She was so forgiving & always overlooking the crappy things her sister said & did, that it seemed slightly unrealistic in the sense that your average person is human & feels anger that they would express under similar circumstances. -- As I was reading, I would find myself livid at some of the things that her sister said & yet Gabrielle seemed indifferent. That bothered me a little, but despite all that, the book was good. & I am glad I read it! :)

This book is a great read by the same author as The Rogues' Dynasty series. A Gentleman Never Tells follows Gabrielle, the daughter of the Duke of Windergreen and Viscount Brentwood. But the stars of this book are a huge Mastiff named Brutus and a fluffy Pomeranian named Prissy. English Lords, pedigreed pooches and Manor houses, all in the vein of Downton Abbey (which I love). The store line has twists and turns, is fast paced and fun. I won't spoil the the main facts but anyone who kidnaps dogs is a criminal in my estimation and needs to be brought to justice. The hero and heroine meet in a cute way and you know from the first chapter that Gabrielle has her own mind. There are some laugh out loud moments and sad ones too. Five Stars!

I've read two other stories in this series and loved them. But this one just didn't, quite, affect me the way those two did. I'm not really sure what the difference was.

This one seemed to lack a depth that the others had. Brent didn't reach into my heart and tug the strings; he was more of a surface character that didn't touch me. I didn't hate him. But I didn't feel like he drew me in like the other heroes in the other books.

I almost feel like this was a "bridge" book. It kind of set up some characters, places and situations that would actually be told in the other books and answered some questions from the past of the characters. It may have been necessary to have that kind of a book, but it wasn't one that kept me up until late at night "because I just have to know what happens next!"

I'm not saying I don't recommend this one. You may need it to fill in some gaps in the overall story. But it's not one I think you'd miss if you chose to get one of the others instead. You could do without this one and still get the gist of the families and how everyone fits together.

SPOILER (one that I really wish I'd known about before getting this) - there is a death of a beloved pet. You suspect it's coming throughout the book, but you hope the author doesn't go there. She does. And, on top of this, she uses it as a springboard for "comfort sex." Honestly, this was not good timing for that to be happening with the characters. It felt off and just wrong. It wasn't touching at all. It was almost as if the author was echoing the heroine's sister's cavalier attitude towards this loved pet's death. I was very disappointed in the way this whole situation - the combination of the death and the sex - was handled. This may be the one aspect of the book that would cause me to not recommend it.

This was a lovely Regency Romance. The writing was fabulous, the plot was interesting and the characters were engaging. The heroine was lovely and her Hero delicious. The dog subplot was cute although Brutus had me in tears by the end. The ending was a tad saccharine, but still good. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.

Good story. I really like this author and I think I'll keep reading her stories. I like the characters and the plot. I like this series as well.
