Good book

It was the title of his book that drew me, promising unusual excitement and interest, but I was disappointed as soon as I found out the plot device is nothing but a cult. Yes, the statistics cited by the author are scary enough but who knows if they are fact or fiction, and a cult just seems more boring than anything for the page-turner summer reading I had envisioned.
When I'm prowling around for good summer reading, I want a book I can get INTO, and that will pull me into the characters' lives. When the main character marries a woman he first met while she was attempting to commit suicide, we know his wife , Alex, is well, flaky. Majorly flaky. Therefore, we don't have much sympathy when she gets hauled away by a cult with nefarious designs on the human race (never clearly delineated just how the cult was going to manage to use biological agents to accomplish this-- only a few paragraphs here and there are given). Dan tries so hard to get his daughter back from the cult, but it falls apart when we actually are in the stronghold of the cult, and it begins to seem like a bad cartoon, or a stupid Hollywood ending.
This book could have been much improved if the points of view had been spread among more interesting characters, if Alex hadn't been such a suicidal loser, and if the little girl, Hana, had showed more spunk and personality instead of being a zombie child. Also, the psychologist, Laura's, coming to Dan's bed and pretending to be Alex, even wearing her perfume, was tacky and male-fantasy, not appealing to women at all. What, is the guy stupid that he can't distinguish between fantasy sex and real sex? Give me a break.

Thief of Souls is a truly shocking story of a man named Dan Behr. Up until his wife Alex joined a mysterious religious group, everything in Dan's life was working. The book starts when Dan goes to pick up Alex from a retreat with the religious group she has joined recently. When Alex doesn't come out, Dan becomes extremely worried, only to find out that she has joined a vicious cult. Dan goes through quite a lot to try to get her back, including kidnapping her from the cult and locking her down in a mountainside cabin. When the attempt to bring her to reality fails, Dan gives up. He gets back on his feet and makes a life for himself and his six year old daughter, Hannah. Things go well until Alex's mother suspiciously dies. Soon after, the cult kidnaps Hannah, forcing Dan to become a member to save his daughter. He then has to face his worst fears and keep from breaking down to want the seemingly perfect life of the cult. This is an excellent book that is really hard to put down, once one gets into the first few chapters. It could be a little hard to follow, due to the continuous twists and turns of the plot, but I encourage others to give it a try. Anyone who likes a suspenseful read will enjoy this one.

I had no idea that this book was about a cult when I first picked it up. When I realized that however, it didn't deter my reading, I thought it would make for an interesting story.
Dan Behr is the lead character. He is a man who loves his family and likes his job. His wife Alex is a complicated woman who we discover has a very interesting yet horrible past. Their daughter Hana is closest to her mother and has to learn some great hardships in life throughout this novel.
Alex has gone to a retreat or so Dan thinks. She has actually become a member of a cult called The Ark. Dan tries to get her back from the cult's grasp but soon comes to the realization that they are too powerful a group for him to be able to free his wife. He joins forces with an individual trained in getting cult members out. This actually works but Alex is already brain washed and it is too late. Dan has to start his life without her and raise his daughter alone.
Unfortunately, Dan has to resort to more drastic measures when the cult kidnaps Hana. He has to infiltrate the group and try to free himself, Alex and Hana.
I found the story lost its credibility when I got to this section of the book...
The story had potential but there were almost too many cult facts thrown in and the character of Laura just didn't come across as real...
I have read other Darian North novels, this one just wasn't his best.

The two best parts of this book are the ending and the dust cover. Very disappointing considering the potential and the plot line. The main character of the book says at one point that it's time to take action. He's right, but, unfortunately about 150 pages late. This is a man who you want to cheer for, but who continues to love his wife insanely after she stabs him in the back to escape back to the cult and have the baby of the cult leader. This is also the man who can't tell the difference between a dream and a woman who comes to his bed in the middle of the night and makes love to him. Definitely wanted to generate more sympathy for him and at the same time feel more menace and suspense from the cult leaders and at the cult compound. But, somehow, they were just stolen from this book.

I must admit it took me awhile to finish this book... It was slow and plodding. The pace never really picks up until it is more than halfway done and the book is filled with took many facts on cults and not nearly enough action. It was interesting to see how one might be able to fall under the cult's spell and then finally see evil within. The pros and cons are shown with nice contrast. The main character of the novel, Dan, is likable and his daughter is one you will root for since she loses people she loves. The love story plotline was not necessary to the plot and got in the way at times...but overall I got a good value for my money[.]

This is not just another mystery novel. This book is about the human experience and what happens when the "black and white" of life gets blurred. I learned a lot about human nature and resiliance, even from the first chapter. This isn't a book that you can really describe because a short synopsis doesn't do it justice. I've lent this book to four friends and all of them had it back to me within a few days because they just couldn't put it down either. We are all now Darian North fans. If it's out of print - go get it - you won't be sorry.
