Lightning flashed, then again. Lightning flared bright enough to sting Markwell’s eyes.

Lightning flashed, then again. Falling snow flickered queerly in the inconstant light, and the window was briefly transformed into a mirror in which Markwell saw his own haunted face. The thunderclap was so tremendous that it seemed to come not only from the sky but from the ground, too, as if heaven and earth were splitting open, announcing Armageddon. Two extended, overlapping, brilliant bolts seared the darkness.

The toad was ceramic, two inches tall, standing on a ceramic lily pad, wearing a top hat and holding a cane. Two weeks earlier the campus literary magazine had published Amphibian Epics, a short story of hers about a girl whose father spun fanciful tales of an imaginary toad, Sir Tommy of England.

Why is Laura Shane so special? It seems when Laura Shane is in trouble a mysterious stranger arrives to save her even from her delivery. She has a rough childhood, but for some reason her "guardian" keeps showing up. Is he an angel? And why is there lightning in the sky whenever he shows up?
Dean Koontz again shows his mastery of his unique category of fiction. This time the protagonist is a woman and there is no dog in this one. His perspective is always fresh and exciting. Suspenseful and exciting this book is recommended for Koontz fans and those who want to give his work a try.
I first read this way back when it was released. I loved it then and I still do now. Now, reading it after a longish break (I've read it at least four times) I do notice some aging - lack of cell phones, disks for computers etc, but it in no way detracts from the essential greatness of the storyline and excitement of the writing. I've read a lot, in fact almost all, of Dean Koontz's books. Many of them are fantastic reads, but this one will always be not only my favourite of his, but my favourite book of all.
Lightning has to be one of my favorite Koontz works (other than Phantoms, Watchers, and the Frankenstein series). Again, in the mid to late eighties, Koontz began to use other genres in his thrillers, and this one has romance as the secondary genre. I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of romance novels, but after reading Servants of Twilight, I figured I'll give Lightning a try.

The story deals a lot of darkeness of humans, as you will know Stefan, Laura's angel really is! And alos is the book about the dark forces of nature and time, and what Stefan must prevant these dark humans are about to do with some kind of dark power.

The book really has good characters. But I do agree that Koontz makes his children talk more like adults, but I've read worse dialouge. Koontz really does give you some surprises, really at the climax. Lightning is a must read of any Koontz fans who haven't or thinking about picking this book up and read (or upload it through your kindle).
This book has to be a new favorite of mine. I never thought I would read any Dean Koontz books, but after this one encounter with this man's work, I am inclined to disagree with my prior judgement of him as an author. This book was so completely NOT what I was expecting. I don't know WHAT I was expecting but, I was pleasantly surprised. I am sold on Dean Koontz. I will be reading more of this authors work. Very good story line. Excellent and believable characters...I thought at one point I was going to be disappointed in the book, but then he turned it around and made it good.....highly recommend if you have never read one of his books, this is a great way to check this author out.
Elastic Skunk
I have now read about a dozen Koonz novels as well as of course many other books/novels by other authors.

When had I decided to write this review (I don't review most books I read, honestly)
I, A) knew that I HAD to do so for LIGHTNING and B) knew that I couldn't really properly express my appreciation for this book ... without giving too much away!!

The most salient reasons for considering this one of the very best books I have EVER read are contained in elements that, if written here, may give some things away that are best discovered by the reader him/herself.

I now find myself in the hellish position ... of trying to decide which Koontz book I like better, "Watchers" or "Lightning!" :-)

Of course there's Koontz' Odd Thomas series (book "1" and book "3" most specifically), his novel, Life Expectancy, The Face and others but, for me, at risk of sounding egotistical, LIGHTNING feels sort of like ... I don't know, like "it was written for me" as it's so along my wavelength in so many ways!

Here is one instance where 5 stars, the limit here, just won't do...
Dean Koontz is one of my favorite writers. He goes from funny to heartbreaking in a few sentences. Lighting is one of his best and I have re-read it multiple times and will no doubt continue to do so over time. I am slowly accumulating his books on my Kindle with eager anticipation of hours of delight.
I was immediately taken by this book and liked the characters and the setting. The time travel aspect was a bit confusing, but I always find time travel stories and rules a bit complicated to sort out in my head. I found the reason for Stefan's time traveling to be a huge let down, and didn't really want to finish the book, but I moved forward and completed it, and I'm glad I did as there was an additional twist I was not expecting. I was expecting something more moving and profound and got the wind knocked out of me so to speak. An interesting and quick read, and enjoyable as well, but could have been so much better!
Laura's life harms her over and over again. At least it would if it weren't for her guardian. She's known him ever since she was eight, but she doesn't know that she was already saved by him at birth.

Unfortunately, her guardian's interest in her draws attention from his enemy, who works to harm or kill Laura for no other reason than that her guardian seems to care for her. Well, and because he just likes killing people.

After meeting her guardian, Stefan, a lot of the story so far is explained, but the explaination just lets you understand all the possibilities for more danger in the future.

Read the editorial review. It says it all, except that the story doesn't run out of ideas halfway through. It just expands into even more possibilities and picks up steam.

Lightning is a suspensful time travel romance novel of the highest quality.

This is a time travel tale in the best sense. They're always my favorites.

This is going on my shelf to read again later.
