Valerie Martin has written a perfect ode to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The fingerprints of Robert Louis Stevenson are in every paragraph, every revelation. This book fits so easily inside the original that it feels like the part of the book that Stevenson wrote, but for reasons beyond comprehension decided to leave out of the published work.

Valerie Martin s pleasure I’ve no doubt. That time I didn’t struggle but tried to get in place as quick as I could. He was in a rare temper and I feared he’d have my life if I didn’t look sharp about doing as he said. I’d broken a cup, trying to wash it, and then hidden the pieces, which he’d found of course, so besides being a careless, loutish girl, I was a liar too and probably a thief.

Mary Reilly by Valerie Martin is a spare and elegant retelling of the story of Robert Lewis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as seen through the eyes of Dr. Jekyll’s young housemaid, Mary Reilly. Mary, a survivor of both abject poverty and childhood abuse, has lived through her share of darkness. She has even managed to learn to read and write, and has gained a respectable position. She and her “master”, the kind and honorable Dr. Jekyll, come to respect, appreciate, and trust each other (there are even the glimmerings of something more developing between them). The prose is beautiful, the subtext and symbolism are subtle, the characters are artfully drawn, and the time period is pitch perfect—an amazing book.

I read this book after Jekyll and Hyde for a Literature class. Got an A on a 10page paper so that’s good. Really cool story and I like that it was the housemaids version of events.

This was a page turner and very well written. A good find.

Valerie Martin returns to the original ideas of Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by eliminating the girlfriend figure which quickly found its way into adaptations beginning with a play only a few years after the original. Valerie Martin also returns to the original by allowing her readers to see the world which Stevenson attempted to write about by emphasizing class/race/gender distinctions and showing the dual nature of England of Stevenson's time. Martin, intriguingly shows more of Mr. Hyde than the original allowed the audience, thus drawing in fans of the original and exciting first-time readers. This book is a must-buy for anyone who enjoyed the original or the 1991 play by David Edgar.

This was different, (no big surprise) than the movie with Julia Roberts. But I was glad I had a face for each person in the book. It was easy to read and I felt like I was really reading Mary Reilly's diary. Well done!

I really like this but it was veryshort I wish that the story was a little bit longer and it had a lot of details that the movie didn't have and it was more informational which I really like in a book. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who wanted a really interesting story about Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that is not like the old version were Mr. Hyde is a monster.
