This book was one of the best vampire stories I've read in a long time. Suspenseful and psychologically tense at the same time! Wolff, an SS officer, is also a vampire, and he is given a mission in the Antarctic, where the sun never shines in the winter.

Lois Tilton is a science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and horror writer. She won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History in the short form category for her story "Pericles the Tyrant" in 2006. In 2005, her story, "The Gladiator's War" was a nominee for the Nebula Award for Best Novelette. She has also written several novels concerning vampires and media-related novels, one each in the Babylon 5 and Deep Space Nine universes.

Fecage

One would think that the threat of either the supernatural or Nazis alone would be frightening enough, but ever since F. Paul Wilson's "The Adversary Cycle," horror fans have been gluttons for this kind of combination of human and extra-mundane evil. Way before "Dead Snow" was a thing, there was Lois Tilton's "Dead Ice," a far more nuanced, and less broad look at an undead Nazi. In fact, Ms. Tilton's handling of the material, and her forsaken character is nuanced enough that I'm not even sure if it would be accurate to call the book's antagonist-protagonist Wolff a Nazi in anything but name.

The book follows the fatalistic quest of a vampire baron to preserve his castle's dignity by backing the Germans in their war against the Allies. He wears an SS uniform and (grudgingly) helps the Nazis fend off the Americans in exchange for being allowed to drink the blood of those GIs he kills for the Fuhrer. When a higher ranking SS man gives Wolff orders to go to a remote weather station in Greenland, the vampire is suspicious, but goes anyway. Darkness ensues.

The author does a good job of controlling the tap on the bloodletting, not descending into splatter-punk (popular at the time) and relying on old-fashioned suspense and her solid skills at describing life in the unforgiving winter to create a credible and believable story of a vampire making common cause with a perhaps greater evil in order to stave off the unknown ("Vae victis" and so on). The book is perfect reading for a cold winter night, and like John Carpenter's "The Thing" it uses the harsh majesty of nature and the grimness of life well beyond civilization's edge to create a primal tale of survival. Recommended.

I love the horror genre but rarely am I thrilled when I take a chance on an unknown (to me) author. IMHO, tone is the most important element of horror. I have no interest in farcical, surreal, ambiguous, over-the-top stories in which the true tonal qualities of horror (suspense, terror, shock, etc) take a back seat to humor or clever absurdities. I also dislike over-written "epics" in which you lose track of the multitude of supporting characters who pop up long after you've forgotten who they are, or grow sleepy reading repetitive descriptions or unimportant details whose only purpose is to pad out the length of the novel.

The setting is highly atmospheric; Greenland in the winter months of WW2, a time before satellites, when communication technology was limited and remote arctic islands were isolated and inaccessible. Even more desolate than the setting of 30 Days of Night (which perhaps owes a serious debt to this novel?)

A lone vampire is planted by the Nazi high command at a key radar station. His vampiric nature is a secret; his mission is to protect the station from a squad of American GIs intent on finding and destroying it. His cruel temperament and mysterious ways create antipathy and suspicion among his fellow Germans, a mix of Nazis and regular career soldiers, but they assume he is just another over-zealous Nazi prick. The storyline is fairly rudimentary but the writing skills of the author keep it fresh and involving. Tilton is two cuts above most writers toiling in the genre.

If you're in the mood for a well-written, atmospheric horror adventure, Darkness on the Ice is a very solid choice. The only questionable thing about it is, with the popularity of the vampire genre and the success of John Carpenter's The Thing, how the hell did Hollywood miss out on this one?

The German High Command is planning a counter attack to throw the Allies back into the sea. For that they need bad weather, really bad weather to ground the Allied aircraft and give their men cover to move into position. They needed to know WHEN the bad weather would come. This means their weather station in Greenland had to send them weather reports and that made it important enough to be protected, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Who would protect it? Who could stand the cold, who could stand the weeks of darkness out on the snow fields without going mad, and still have the energy to take on American patrols?
Why, a vampire, of course...
