William Wallace Johnstone (October 28, 1938 – February 8, 2004) was an American author, mostly of western, horror and survivalist novels. Born and raised in southern Missouri, Johnstone was the youngest of four children. His father was a minister and his mother a school teacher. He quit school when he was 15 and worked in a carnival and as a deputy sheriff. He later served in the United States Army and, upon returning to civilian life, worked in radio broadcasting for 16 years.

Hardcover Paperback Kindle. This is the first book that Johnstone wrote for his Ashes Series. It is set in the post apocalypse America where the Americans are devastated and worried. The situation is horrid as families and loved ones are either killed or displaced. The streets have also been overrun by thieves and gangsters. A very interesting book. I have just started reading Johnstone's books in the last 6 mo. or so & this one was a little different. I’ve continued my very enjoyable foray into the horror writing of William W. Johnstone with Cat’s Eye. First, I do want to recommend that you read Cat’s Cradle prior to this one. It gives you the origin story not only for Anya and Pet, but for our hero in this tale. It was purely "gross-out" as Stephen King has said. The character development was not as good as usual but still ok.

Homicide detectives Leo Franks and Lani Prejean race against time to stop a killer who is luring young women to grisly, horrifying deaths and discover that the murderer may be a part of a terrible conspiracy spanning decades and hundreds of victims. Original.

I usually give 5 stars to Mr. Johnstone but this one was really explicit in description of the madness. It usually doesn't bother me but this one did. He is a great author & one of the best character development authors ever. He is right up there with Stephen King & that is as high as it gets for me. Their books are nothing alike but their character development is amazing.

Quite a shocker! Not for the squeamish in any way, if you like horror, this is a must read and I am so glad I found his book. Now I will check out other books by this author. I Highly Recommend people to buy this book. Shocking ending, nonstop excitement and great characters. I would give this book ten stars if allowed, hoping I feel this way again on my next horror read, very very unique and I love the way this author weaves this story. Thank you for this great book!!!!

I love William W. Johnson's horror books. I also like several of his other books - some of the series. I don't have all of the "Ashes" series, but I have a good 3/4 of them. Also have the first 4-5 books of most of his Western series. But I am a big fan of Horror, so those are the ones I like the most. The above "Night Mask" was a pretty good sample of his horror books with some supernatural added to it. I love that.

I've said it before I really wish he still wrote novels like this. This book had mystery horror gore and paranormal stuff. I loved it from start to finish could not put it down. Just can't say enough about it.
