Johnson-Miller's young adult novel is a classic fantasy-adventure tale for girls, like Litney, who are fighting demons to find their way through adolescence. Who should she trust when enemies sometimes look like friends? How can she have faith in what is unseen? What are her responsibilities? How does she fit in with her family? Does she have the smarts and strength to protect her loved ones from harm? And what happens should she fail?

Johnson-Miller works all this out in a story that exudes love of the land and the animals that inhabit it. Her writing nicely shuttles between fast action sequences and serene introspection. Litney's adventures encompass the whole package: comfort in the love of friends, humility in the face of learning, grief over loss, satisfaction from her successes, and thrill at her newfound powers. Litney's feet are held to the fire but, as she learns, she always has what she needs at hand; this seems to me a tender and humane way to map the terrain into adulthood.

The first book in a series, The Bracelet is a perfect read for mom or grandmother and daughter to share together, and a wonderful mother's day or graduation gift.
My children (ages 11 & 12) were given this book as a gift and were unable to put it down. Johnson-Miller has created a captivating world populated with loving characters. I found myself immediately swept up in the plot, pausing only to savor the lyrical writing that narrates the story. It is a great read for the entire family.
