Forget the grim officer and focus on this group. In front was precisely the sort of person she had been hoping for: a well-dressed Spanish or Portuguese lady with three-no, four-children and a maid with her arms full of the fifth, a squalling baby. Meg fixed a respectful smile on her lips and stepped forwards to approach the harassed woman. The Officer and the Proper Lady. It's not great literature but rarely is that found in a Harlequin historical! I liked the characters and their growing relationship. Both were admirable people who were perfect for each other.

Major Hal Carlow was a fine soldier, but he was also a flirt, a rake and a scoundrel! In general, he tried to steer clear of proper young ladies--no fun at all--and spend time with the sort of women who appreciated his finer qualities....Miss Julia Tresilian's duty was to find a husband, but her prospective suitors bored her to tears. Yet even talking to the incorrigible Hal Carlow was dangerous to her marriage prospects, let alone anything more....

I bought the Kindle edition of this book because the author had been recommended to me. The story is fun, but knowing it's part of a series by different authors without knowing what other books comprise the series and in what order is a bit annoying. Louise Allen is a good writer. However, the people who formatted the Kindle edition should shot. Words run together, words broken apart... I'm a novice at creating e-books and could, and have, done a better job on a book than this "professional" edition offered for sale. Based on other reviews, this is a problem with the whole series. Still, format warts notwithstanding, this is a fun, light read, one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to someone else.

This book was OK but not very exciting. For heavens sake! Why so much doubt on both their parts as to if the other loved them? Rather boring if you ask me. For a reputed rake & experienced lover, Hal wasn't very exciting in bed.
Oh my! The Gypsy is still up to his nasty mischief! Wish someone would do a family tree so we can see each family & remember the relationship of the family members.

I loved all of this series. They fit together so well and left you wanting the next one immediately. She is one of my new favorite authors. Well worth the read.

I read this whole series of 8 books and enjoyed this story of Hal Carlow very much. This story showed that even someone with a bad reputation could be a good guy. He has a very kind heart even with all the bad things going on around him.

I had not read books in a series by different authors before, that shared plotlines and characters. This was a worthwhile entry in the overall story arc.

I really enjoyed this book as part of the entire series. Not my favorite out of the Regency Silk Scandal series, but a really good read. I recommend reading the entire series in order.
