Catch as Catch Can is the third studio album by Kim Wilde, released in autumn 1983. Having toured the UK and Europe in November and December 1982, there was a silence of six months. Kim Wilde returned with the single "Love Blonde", a jazz/swing-inspired track that lyrically mocked the blonde bombshell image that some media had dealt Kim in the previous years. But the sound was unique to the single; the rest of the album continued the electronic theme that was introduced on Select.

CATCH-AS-CATCH-CAN There is a capacity in some people for evil, a dark facet of their personality which ordinary, everyday life may never reveal. But place one of them in circumstances where the possibility of evil exists, and it will rise to the surface transforming him into a monster as deadly and destructive as a professional killer. Such a man was Clive Breen, and such an opportunity for evil arose when his cousin Laila, young, lonely, and bewildered, turned to him for comfort and advice. Laila had been unknowingly poisoned, but she could be saved if treatment was administered in time. But Laila had disappeared before she could be warned of her danger. There were people who knew of Laila's whereabouts, and there were people who knew of the vital necessity of her reaching a hospital in time, but only Clive knew both, and he wanted Laila to die. This is the story of a race literally against time, a race in which the prize is the life of an innocent girl. With all the mastery of suspense and heart-stopping tension that her readers have come to expect, CHARLOTTE ARMSTRONG tells this story of a nerve-racking search and the people involved in it; good, everyday people contending with the unsuspected evil in one man.

I picked this one up at the Black Friday sale relying on dim memories of reading her work many decades ago. Checking her out on Wikipedia, I found that my memory was accurate to the extent of identifying some among her works I must have read when published and learning that she also had converted some into movies. Of recognition for her efforts, there are a number of reliable ones to her credit.
There really is no puzzle here, no mystery upon which to shed light, rather, this is a "ladies in distress" novel, pure and simple, or if you prefer, a "find the lost girl before she dies" saga. It is well-written, with the two females in distress pretty well-delineated. Some degree of suspense is generated over the search for them; never is there any great degree of it.
The plot is simple: an adolescent from an isolated foreign village has been 'adopted' by an elderly man and, after much travel, brought to his home. She is the major beneficiary of his not inconsiderable estate. There are two others who inherit: they become major beneficiaries if the Old Man Dies. He dies, of course, and when the cause is discovered, an intense search for the adolescent is undertaken. It turns out she may also have been an intended or unintended victim of the same cause. The remainder of the book is devoted to the search for the girl and also for one of the searchers who may, herself, have become a victim.
This is neither a bad nor a very good book. The author is fully professional but seems not to have fully engaged herself in the work. There is is an element of romance which provides some of the most interesting elements of the book.
All-in-all, this is an acceptable light read, but without the kind of pizzazz that really grips one.
Interesting Charlotte Armstrong book. I like most of hers that I've read, the suspense builds and she is a master at it.
