Marion Gibbons (née Chesney; 10 June 1936 – 30 December 2019) was a Scottish writer of romance and mystery novels since 1979. She wrote numerous successful historical romance novels under a form of her maiden name, Marion Chesney, including the Travelling Matchmaker and Daughters of Mannerling series. Using the pseudonym M. C. Beaton, she also wrote many popular mystery novels, most notably the Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth mystery series

Back in Society: A Novel of Regency England (The Poor Relation, Vol 6). Marion Chesney. I have wanted to read a book by MC Beaton (aka Marion Chesney, etc) for some time and finally, due to an Audible Deal of the Day, snatch up my first one. Rather than one of her mysteries, I picked up one of her light Regency Romantic Comedies and it was a gem of a story that left me not only eager for the rest of the series, but for more of her books. Lady Fortescue Steps Out is the first book in the Poor Relations series. The series title says it all as this is the story of a group of people, starting with Lady Fortescue, who come together out of necessity.

Book 1 lets us know how six impoverished "poor relations" of wealthy, aristocratic families find each other and, together, attempt to alleviate the near starvation conditions under which they had been living, on their own, as they strove to keep up appearances among their social peers while living in genteel poverty. Chesney has a very unique voice in her books, which provides a slightly macabre window onto the often brutal demands of daily life in the Regency period, a coarse reality that historical romance novels normally tend to gloss over.

I feel like I need a tissue. Ms. Beaton is such a master of character development; I feel like I've been a member of this odd little family. Thank you, Ms. Beaton, for the hours of entertainment you've given me. I can only imagine how empty you must have felt when you typed that final period on the page to end the series. I'm going on to the sisters series again. It's been a long time since I last read about them. They. were my introduction to your stories. I remember lots of out loud laughter and great romances. =)

Excellent wrap up of a very fun series. A distraught Lady Jane comes to the Poor Relations Hotel and is taken up by the Oldsters. A supposedly frivolous French Comte and his Scottish friend soon become involved. Regency spying and attempts at assassinations are in the air. And of course Love.

More attention was placed on the problems of the Comte and Lady Jane, leaving the Poor Relations a bit in the background although they were strong at the very satisfactory ending. I truly enjoyed the entire series, and this was a very suitable ending.

I am normally not a fan of 'romance' novels. whether they are period or otherwise.
but I LOVE M.C. Beaton. I first started reading her modern Agatha Raisin mysteries set in the Cotswolds and then onto Hamish Macbeth... set in Scotland. they're the cozy mystery genre but so humorous and witty.
those two series I enjoy reading again and again. as much for the background as for the plot. (which is usually excellent btw.)
so finding these small historical romance treasures recently of the Poor Relations series was fun!
perfect summer escapism. and if ever we needed an occasional escape from this century... it's NOW!

This book is the last of its series, all endings tied up nicely, with visits from old friends. Highly recommended with the entire series. Bring a tissue to say goodbye.

I always marvel at how skillful M.C. Beaton is at weaving such intricate tales. I always know who will end up with whom, but cannot figure out the "how". I am sorry to see the end of this series and have thoroughly enjoyed every word. Now back to my beloved Hamish Macbeth.

The series of stories about The Poor Relations hotel ends with each of the poor relations happy and content with their future.
I am impressed with the authors knowledge of the period.

What a grand collection of adventures and characters. Really takes the reader back to a romantic and irresistible time and place. Beautifully written.
What a great end to this series. Everything turns out just like it should. As well-written as all of Beaton' s works typically are. This series for me rates on par with the Daughters of Mannerling series. It is not quite as good a series as the House For the Season or School for Manners series but still far above the typical Traditional Regency Romance. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
