Bantam New Fiction, 352 pages. Hands down, best book I've ever read.

Max is twenty-seven and recently, tragically widowed. Bantam New Fiction, 352 pages. Published September 1st 1988 by Bantam. Honestly, Glenn Savan was one of the most intelligent-and underrated-writers I've ever had the pleasure of reading when indulging in fiction.

Glenn Savan, whose popular first novel, ''White Palace'' (1987), was about a St. Louis waitress's mismatched romance with an ad man, died on Monday at his home in Shrewsbury, Mo. He was 49. The cause was either a heart attack or stroke, his family said. Mr. Savan's book was about a recently widowed man with fussy attitudes and his Pygmalion-like embroilment with a slatternly waitress 14 years his senior who works at a White Palace hamburger joint. The complicated relationship eventually transforms both of them. The book, which became a best seller, was originally.

Bantam Books, 1 сент. White palace Bantam New Fiction. Max is an up-and-coming advertising man and a devastated widower. Celibate since his wife's tragic death, Max suddenly and shockingly finds himself careening into a torrid affair with a woman from the other side of the tracks-a lusty, hard-drinking, passionate 41-year-old White Palace waitress named Nora. This is the story of how their back-breaking, one-night stand turns, quite remarkably, into an amazing kind of love.

For those who have an interest in the 'Great Goddess' (my new vocabulary word) Callipygian is a revelation. Callipygian means shapely buttocks or as Savan describes 'big ass'. What is interesting about this is that some of the very early goddess figurines are pear shaped like Max's Nora: large bottom and thighs and small breasts. And Nora IS a goddess of the earthy variety; fecund, primordial, outrageous, sexual. Having said all this I was absolutely entranced by this novel. I loved every minute of it and I was so disappointed that the novelist has died and we only have two books from him. A real shame.

Ordered this book because I was going to take a trip to St. Louis and enjoy reading novels that take place in cities I am visiting. I vaguely recalled seeing the movie a long time ago but did not find it memorable. That was definitely not the case with the book. It was a gripping story with interesting characters and Savan had a great wit and way with words. An amazing first novel.

White Palace is one of my all time favorite books (and I read a lot). I've read this book several times over the years and I fall in love with it every time. I get immersed in Max and Nora's world and don't want to leave it. Glenn Savan is one of my favorite authors. I wish he was still with us to write more.

I've read this twice, over a 20 year period. Loved it just as much the second time. (I haven't seen the movie, and don't care to. The book is fantastic, and I don't want to ruin it by watching it.)

I loved the movie and I love the book.

I enjoyed this book very much. The story is original and unconventional, portrayal of characters is well done and interesting to follow.

And I did watch the movie, a few times. But the book, I got lost in. There's nothing I can say that the other reviewers haven't already. I don't understand how someone could not like this book if they enjoy well written romance novels. It was so intense/absorbing, I could not put it down until it was done and it stayed with me for days. THAT'S a good read.
What I liked the most is that it has the original cover, also book was in excellent shape. Thanks
