Rosamunde Pilcher's The End of Summer read by Geraldine James was entertaining enough to fill in three hours of the journey. This is a gentle story, although there is one dramatic episode towards the end of the book. The most enjoyable parts for me were the descriptions of Elvie, the loch and the surrounding landscape and Geraldine James’s reading of the story.

Sitting on a California beach at summer's end, Jane Marsh thinks back to her childhood at the estate called Elvie in a remote corner of Scotland. She remembers not only the heather-covered hills and the lonesome loch, but her grandmother. and, of course, Sinclair. She has secretly dreamed of marrying rakishly handsome Sinclair and settling at Elvie forever.

After years in the United States, Jane returns to the tranquil Scottish estate, Elvie, where she spent a magical childhood. Memories of Elvie had always summoned the image of Sinclair, the rakish man Jane had once dreamed of marrying, but now that she is home, she finds Sinclair a different man. His charm has a purpose, and Jane can no longer trust him...or herself, in The End of Summer.

I adored Rosamunde Pilcher’s THE END OF SUMMER! I was disappointed when I came to the end! Rosamunde Pilcher is a brilliant writer and her scenic descriptions are beautiful. It’s amazing how many different ways she can find to say something. And I loved being drawn back into the Scottish countryside way of life. It brought back many memories of when I lived in Scotland as a small child. I could really relate to the characters, as my Scottish grandfather looked after a large estate in Stirlingshire and my grandparents lived in a cottage in the grounds. The sweet possibility of young romance and the torment of unrequited love moved me to tears at times!
