I have read this novel every few years over a span of about four decades--I will buy any used copy I come across at garage sales, library sales, etc. so I have a few copies around when I need a "fix." I think the magic this book has for me is the portrayal of an individual in crisis, dragged down by lassitude and ennui, and the path towards restoration and wholeness. The crucible for this development is an intended vacation (or retreat), and how a stranger in a strange land can reinvent himself through challenge, friendship and even love. The way in which this happens is the arc of the story. I read it repeatedly because it reminds me of the hope we all have despite--or because of--feelings and events that terrify us.

I keep buying this book. My first copy never came back after lending, along with some other never returned books, to a friend's husband. Years later I found a used copy and somewhere in many moves it disappeared. Just recently decided I wanted to read it once more so purchased this copy. The mood is a bit dark and dismal as that is the current mindset of the main character at this time in his life. But there are others around him changing his outlook, bringing him to life. It is entertaining.

One of my favorite books from my young adulthood. Just wanted to read it again - but back in school so haven't had a chance to finish it yet!

This novel spoke to me 20 years ago and I wanted to read it again. It is a story about love and finding oneself in a wild, beautiful place. It helped me get through a rough time. Written by a thoughtful writer who had several other wonderful books, I connected to the wildness, to the passions, to the torment. This is not about current times, but is universal, nonetheless.

I did like it when I was a teenager, not so much now.
This is the story of a man struggling with anomie who travles to scotland to fight his inner demons and discovers love, honor and himself along the way. This book has most of Mr. West's normal themes but captures the feelings of restlessness which seem to be so common in these modern times.
