John Edmund Gardner (born November 20, 1926- died 3 August 2007) is an English spy novelist. He wrote 16 James Bond novels from 1981 to 1996. Gardner was born in Northumbria. He graduated from St. John's College, Cambridge and did postgraduate study at Oxford. Gardner volunteered for service in the Royal Marines during World War II. Gardner's father was a clergyman in the Church of England and encouraged Gardner to follow his example.

John Gardner then joined the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald as a drama critic . At that time, 33-year-old John was heavily addicted to alcohol. In 1964, he kicked off his addiction and published his memoir titled ‘Spin the Bottle. Consequently, the book garnered huge popularity and was extremely well received by the masses. It was later made into a movie. Riding high on the success of his Oakes books, Gardner created two more fictional characters - an Italian Scotland Yard Inspector named Derek Torry and Herby Kruger. Derek Torry appeared in the novels ‘A Complete State of Death’ (1969) and ‘The Corner Men’ (1974).
