Visit our Web site at ww. .The sweet, sharp scent of sourdough bread cooking in an oak-fired oven wended and whirled around her unsuspecting senses and unleashed a hunger inside her she had not known existed. It hit her so hard she could barely breathe. The air was hot and thick with the promise of life’s simple and not-so-simple pleasures.

Sarah-Kate Lynch has a delightful way of mixing food and love and a tiny bit of mysticism and creating a terrific book. Aug 01, 2008 Melissa rated it really liked it.

In this funny and poignant novel, a handsome French baker looks like being the secret ingredient to refresh Esme's stale life. But is the recipe for happiness closer to home? i'Esme's bread begged to be eaten. You simply could not be in the same room as her sourdough without licking your lips and instantly realising it was exactly what you felt like eating. It was exactly what you had been missing. But all is not well in the House in the Clouds

This book was predictable and took too long to reveal the secret from the protagonist's past.

Only 7 left in stock (more on the way). This book was predictable and took too long to reveal the secret from the protagonist's past. I would not recommend reading this book if you are a fan of Blessed are the Cheesemakers, as it falls flat compared to that work.

Sarah-Kate Lynch has been a journalist for more than twenty years (she started, she claims, when she was seven) but far prefers making things up to trying hard not to. Her first novel, Blessed Are the Cheesemakers, is published by Black Swan. She hopes one day to say in this bit of the book that she spends her time between her homes in Auckland, Dublin and New York. At this stage, however, she only has one home and that is in Auckland.

Lynch is a distinctive voice at the quality end of the popular-fiction genre. Lynch handles her plot with aplomb, keeping the tension building rather than dissolving once the secrets emerge. novel, genuine poignancy. There's a bit much description for my liking, rather than letting feelings and physical details unfold in their own time.

Love, loss, and the redemptive power of breadmaking are the irresistible ingredients in this warm, witty novel by the author of "Blessed Are the Cheesemakers.

It's not easy being the adoring mother of one, living in an eccentric tower in the middle of the English countryside coping with a short-sighted goat, a grumpy father-in-law and a dysfunctional swarm of bees, but Esme Slack manages it. Or does she? Sometimes the gob-smackingly gorgeous French sourdough bread she insists on making every day is the only thing she truly believes she is getting right. But is that because it tastes so delicious, or because it reminds her of the girl she once was and, more particularly, of Louis, the village boulanger who saved her from a life of being half-baked? All she has left of the Frenchman is the sourdough starter he gave her, made from the fermented juice of an apple planted 190 years before by his great-great-great-grandparents and still going strong in her kitchen cupboard...until she meets him again by chance.

Too bad more people don't know Sarah-Kate Lynch. Her books are delightful, and all focus on aspects of food. Of course the story is more than that, with interesting plots and quirky dialogue. This involves a London couple who go to the countryside to start up a brreadmaking business, and hire as their baker the French baker the wife had had an affair with in her youth. Hmmm. Makes for some interesting situations. She really gets into the details of making really good artisan breads, and she does it well.

Illustrates the healing power of talking about and dealing with family disasters.

This book was predictable and took too long to reveal the secret from the protagonist's past. I would not recommend reading this book if you are a fan of Blessed are the Cheesemakers, as it falls flat compared to that work. (I would give that book 5/5 stars compared with 2/5 stars for By Bread Alone.)

I finally finished this book but it took forever. Very slow story. A waste of time.
Fantastic Read. Enjoyed very much. Once started very hard to stop. Didn't want it to end
