A cigarette-maker's romance. Chapter I. The inner room of a tobacconist's shop is not perhaps the spot which a writer of fiction would naturally choose as the theatre of his play, nor does the inventor of pleasant romances, of stirring incident, or moving love-tales feel himself instinctively inclined to turn to Munich as to the city of his dreams.

Both the plot and the characters are so contrived that this reader could not connect. Even the plot twist at the end was incredible.

This novel is a delightful find, and well worth the read. While written over a century ago, and describing a time, (and manners) which are long past, there is a certain timelessness to it.

Not my cup of tea, but that's just speaking for me. Others may like it a lot. Some books appeal, some don't.

Really a very nice romance, written over 100 years ago, and it would be enjoyable to people who don't normally read romance novels.

A cigarette maker in Munich believes he is really a count and heir to a great Russian fortune, and every Wednesday expects to get a visit from Russian officials so informing him. Of course it never happens and everyone thinks him mad. He is also in love with a girl who works with him, who loves him back and tries hard to believe in his illusion. Sure enough the whole thing comes true; our hero gets his fortune and the girl, too. Charming and sentimental, this short novel contains some of Crawford's most chizzled and direct writing. It's one of his best books.
