Desmond and Deirdre Doyle will have been married for twenty-five years in October. Maeve Binchy was born in Dublin, and went to school at the Holy Child Convent in Killiney.

Desmond and Deirdre Doyle will have been married for twenty-five years in October. It falls to the Doyles’ eldest daughter, Anna, to decide how best to celebrate her parents’ Silver Wedding. No use asking her sister Helen, living in her London convent, or her brother Brendan, who has chosen another form of exile on a bleak farm in the West of Ireland. She took a history degree at UCD and taught in various girls’ schools, writing travel articles in the long summer holidays.

Very much like all Binchy books, likeable, relatable characters. Good family story, where the characters have to overcome common family relationship struggles. It all works out in the end.

Not my favourite Maeve Binchy, but since she passed away several years ago and the books I haven’t read of hers are now necessarily limited, I’ll take whatever I can get! . This was a classic Maeve Binchy - a story told from several people’s viewpoints. It was a rather sad story of a celebration of a 25th wedding anniversary culminating after revelations of years of secrets and ensuing unhappiness - between friends, between parents and children, between siblings, between husbands and wives.

She could read his face so well. This was the same look she saw on his face when older actors would come up and join them in the club and tell old tales about people long gone. sted then too, it was a welcoming, courteous, earnest look. Hoping that it passed as genuine interest, hoping that the conversation wouldn't last too long. Tm sorry, I'm going on a bit,' she apologized. She pulled a funny face at him as she sat at the other end of the bed dressed only in one of his shirts, the Sunday papers and a breakfast tray between them.

Although I have not read all of Maeve Binchy's books, I have read 7 of them. Silver Wedding just seemed to quit without a finalizing ending. The characters were a little hard to keep straight and I feel like I should have taken notes so I could remember just who everyone was. Maybe I'm just getting older. Perhaps I am spoiled, but the ending in Silver Wedding was not Binchy's best.

The story centres around the planning and execution of the 25th wedding anniversary of Desmond and Deidre. They are an insecure couple who had an insecure start to their marriage. We slowly get their story throughout their book. The highlights of their lives are carefully captured and displayed on a wall in their home. They have 3 children and we also learn their stories throughout the book. Other characters like Father Hurley, who married the Doyles, also has his own story. I must say I was a bit frustrated that we didn't learn the full story of what happened to his nephew. Frank grew up with Desmond and they work together at a grocery store chain. Frank is married to the owner of the business's daughter and we learn about all of their woes too. The secondary characters were mostly at the original wedding and have been invited to the Silver Anniversary.

This was a wonderful story of a couple approaching their 25th wedding anniversary and the people who were involved in their lives. I loved the character development.
There were several lines that touched me:
“Why would God give me all this happiness when he doesn’t give it to everyone else?”
“Since nothing in this world was definite, why cross your bridges before you came to them?”
“...people thought he was such a good conversationalist. He talked only about them.”
This is the 4th Maeve Binchy book I’ve read and I’ll be looking for more. All have been amazing.

I have read all (I think) of Maeve Binchy's books and in this, at least as it started fleshing out the characters (some of them the same as other books) there was a harshness in the tone of the narrator that I didn't like. Usually, Binchy details her characters with all their flaws in a loving and accepting way. Perhaps it was only her take on the narrator, but I felt like I was reading about people I knew and loved written by someone who didn't love them as I did. Of course, the story, plotting, pace etc. were flawless and I slogged on until the plot overtook me and by the end I enjoyed it. Maybe it was just me? I don't know but it was not my favorite Binchy book.

Very much like all Binchy books, likeable, relatable characters. Good family story, where the characters have to overcome common family relationship struggles. It all works out in the end. But not in a saccharin way. In a realistic way. I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you want an easy read with happy characters.

In 2000 I encountered the captivating world of Maeve Binchy in NYC's original Barnes & Noble. Drawn to the mesmerizing colors of the paperback spines, I entered a a wonderful literary journey. Silver Wedding highlights the reality of life when we live it according to impressing others. Maeve weaves a wonderful tale through her life-like characters with an Irish touch. As always in her books, a valuable message. I dearly miss her.

I've been reading Maeve Binchy's work for years. I was looking for entertaining summer reading and couldn't resist reading Silver Wedding (read it before, years ago). Ms. Binchy gets into the characters' heads and takes the reader along for the ride. Following the main female character through the story is entertaining; you can't help but think "I'm glad she isn't in MY life!" I've read everything that Maeve Binchy has written (I think) and this book is one of my favorites. If you enjoy her writing, then you have to read this one.
It was a touching story about family, and the lives that take turns along the way. The family was being judged for a speedy marriage. It seems to have worked out in the end.
