This book links the first book, about World War I, with the third book, about World War II. With a little old-fashioned plot manipulation the main character, Dicken Quinney, has more adventures between the wars than during them. The first book of this trilogy, The Bright Blue Sky, was off to a slow start and if I hadn't liked Hennessy's other trilogies so much I might have quit halfway through. This book does pick up the pace as does the third, Once More the Hawks.

I found his Royal Navy trilogy more fast-paced throughout as well as more engaging. Again, the main character, Kelly Maguire, is an ensign during World War I, keeps rising in rank during the second book, and becomes an admiral during World War II.

My favorite of the three trilogies is the one about the British Army. Hennessy opens the first book, Soldier of the Queen, in medias res, with Coby Goff one of the 600 lancers charging the guns at Balaclava. He is then sent as an observer to the Franco-Prussian War and the American Civil War. The trilogy follows his and his grandson's adventures in the Zulu War, the Boer War, and the World Wars.
