As she tells him in this epistolary picture book?Rodell's first?she misses him, remembers their games fondly and can't wait until his Christmas visit. Clearly well-intentioned but bland, this portrayal adds little of note to the growing literature on nontraditional families. The text in this book is simple and the pictures are evocative; the story-line clear and easy to understand. Have a funny book on stand-by to read after it, in case you or your child are affected by it the same way I was. Recommended.

Susanna Rodell and Kim Gamble have captured the confusion and pain caused by a complex family situation, while showing how family members can create new lives without relinquishing their earlier ties to one another.

Part of my job involves children reading to me. One little girl chose this book to read to me last week.

It is a story about siblings who are separated due to a parental relationship break-down. A common story, unfortunately. The narrator child lives in the U.S.A., and she is “writing” (through her mother) to her brother who lives in Australia. She is looking forward to his visit.

By the end of the book I was crying (and I rarely cry), the tears soaking my handkerchief.

This book beautifully demonstrates sibling love, the longing and emotional needs of separated siblings. The descriptions of life before and after the separation are spot on.

Today, another child chose this book to read to me. I warned the child this book made me cry last time I heard it, and there might be tears. Secretly, I thought: I know the story now, I won’t be affected again. Wrong. It took longer, but in the end, I was wiping away tears. This new little reader said he knew a family like this, and now understood how his friend might feel.

The text in this book is simple and the pictures are evocative; the story-line clear and easy to understand.

Have a funny book on stand-by to read after it, in case you or your child are affected by it the same way I was.

Recommended.

One of my son's favorite books. I cried the first time I read it and bought a copy for my son's half brother who lives far away. It does a great job explaining that Grace is still Fred's sister even though they live far apart.
