The Seymour Tapes Tim Lott Viking £1. 9, pp256. To those who knew him, Dr Alex Seymour seemed much like any other mildly harassed middle-aged man. He worked as a GP in an inner-city practice and lived in a chaotic, nondescript house with his wife of 20 years, their two teenage children and new baby. These clandestine cameras enabled him, in a small way, to be master of his universe once more. But, as we now know, his dalliance with them was also to have unexpectedly horrific consequences.

Strato Nyman couldn't be more of an odd-one-out.
Dr Alex Seymour seems to have it all - with a solid marriage of twenty years, two teenage children, a new baby and an unblemished career as a London GP, his life seems perfect - but then a simple trip to the local supermarket changes things irrevocably. Strato Nyman couldn't be more of an odd-one-out. He's the only black kid in, he knows more about particle physics than his teacher, and he's constantly picked on by school bully Lloyd Archibald Turnbull. It's only at home that he blends in to the background – his parents are too busy arguing to notice he exists.
In 1996, Lott's first book, a memoir, The Scent of Dried Roses, was published and won the PEN/Ackerley Prize for autobiography. It is now published as a Penguin Modern Classic. He has since published The Love Secrets of Don Juan, The Seymour Tapes and Fearless, a young adult novel for Walker Books, which was shortlisted for the Guardian Children's Fiction prize.
