Burning Secret is a coming of age story, and Zweig perfectly captures the mingled confusion, anger, sadness, happiness, and wisdom that comes when a child becomes a conscious agent in the world. There is a sense of loss throughout: the child loses his innocence, the mother her youth and perhaps a last chance for adventure, and the baron a conquest.
