Born Manchester 27 December 1929. Professional actress 1949-1966. I rarely re-read my books but decided to have a go with Suffragettes. My suffragette novel Kessie which won a Best Historical novel award is obviously a different kettle of fish.
Joyce Marlow draws on her extensive historical knowledge to depict the highs and lows of the suffrage campaign in a highly readable novel that has a surprising relevance to the problems that still face women in the twenty-first century. My sister, Joyce Marlow, who has died aged 87, was an actor, author and social historian. In 1986 she won the Elizabeth Goudge Trophy for Kessie, the first of the series. Daughter of Mary (nee Smethurst) and William Lees, she was born in Manchester of radical, Unitarian stock. Joyce’s aim from an early age was to be a famous actor or writer, and her passion at school was history.
