He actually seems to pick a remarkably good wife and I look forward to seeing their relationship develop in future books. In the backdrop, you have his sensible brother, Robert, who is trying to make ends meet and becoming a father for the first time. I did laugh out loud at Cyril Abraham attempts to write Portuguese-oh, Lord, he shouldn't have tried, lol! Recommend it and looking forward to reading the Iron Ships!.

James Onedin is in a battle with his former employer and main competitor, Mr. Callan . James is taking emigrants to Canada, including the Stirlings, relatives of Robert's wife Sarah, who, as family members of the Onedins, travel for free. Callan, to keep what few clients he has. Callon has put the squeeze on Mr. Watson, who recently consigned a small shipment to Onedin, telling him they will refuse to carry his trade to India unless they get 100% of his business. Callan's son Edmund begins to set his eye on what few assets James has managed to acquire. On the voyage out the Stirlings are found to have smallpox and the husband dies.

Rather too much business/shipping for my tastes but an interesting book. Apparently the first in a series.

Writers: Cyril Abraham, Simon Masters. This is one of the best series I have seen, a sea captain getting his start with his own shipping line, his crew, his wife, drama with a touch of comedy, I was lucky to find the entire series in the USA, it's a shame the USA only sells the 2 sets when there are many more. The USA needs to take a good look at BBC period pieces and its way overdue the film industry here in the USA would make some of our own, not many done, can't think of ten of them.
