Sweet's Folly - Fiona Hill. Reading books on foreign lands was Honoria’s chief passion or at least her most intimate delight, for she was very fond of music, but everyone knew that. In her heart she cherished a secret longing to make journeys herself, to visit exotic places, and to explore the wonderful monuments to be found abroad. Fortunately, he had not divined this.

Our heroine starts her life at Sweet's Folly, the Blackwood family home, and must learn to deal with the machinations of her spurned suitor, Claude Kemp, and the hilarious antics of her aunts. And, when a stroke of great good fortune sends Emily, Alexander, and Honoria to London, there is also a most extraordinary transformation to be reckoned with: shy, scholarly Alexander has become a perfect devil with the ladies!

Fiona Hill considerably more wit and pizazz than the legendary Georgette herself.

I have been basking in the sunlight of this author's writings. My favorite of her books so far is probably The Autumn Rose, But I've enjoyed pretty much all her writings. Another favorite is The Country Gentleman.

But this one... Oh, my how disappointed I was, especially toward the end. In fact, I was a bit stunned when I realized much of the storyline would be divided between two stories. The primary storyline is about a young woman named Honoria who misunderstands a conversation between the two spinster aunts with whom she lives, resulting in her misguided belief they can no longer afford to have her live with them. The misunderstanding results in Honoria making herself available to be wed to her neighbor, Alexander, who is a very unusual man, seemingly totally out of touch with his emotions - apparently somehow related to his fascination with geometry.

The secondary storyline has to do with the aunts desirous of setting up a home for their dozens of animals - mostly cats - once they have passed from this mortal coil. I could never get into their story - it's simply foolish and insipid - mostly because of their silly conversations.

Back to Honoria and Alexander. Early on there is a huge misunderstanding between the two of them, causing Alexander to believe Honoria is involved with a gentleman who lives in their neighborhood. Since Alex believes theirs is a marriage of convenience, he simply retreats further into his world of geometry and leaves Honoria unprotected from the neighborhood wolf. Eventually, we see a completely different side of Alexander but not until Honoria, Alexander and Alexander's sister, Emily go to London. Hoping Alex and Honoria would find their way to a fulfilling marriage, I stuck with the book and here's where I will include a huge SPOILER so don't read if you don't want to learn what has me so upset. Alexander turns into a completely different person in London. He emerges from his geometry infested brain, dresses up and literally throws himself into the arms of a previous paramour (apparently, he had quite the good time in London when he was attending Oxford with a certain countess).

Honoria, who has never had an actual marriage with Alexander is heartbroken. Enough said. Nothing Alexander or the author can write in order to fix this marriage could possibly work. Yes, there were misunderstandings all the way around, but Alexander's affair was literally disgusting and over the top.

The plot here is a marriage of convenience scenario between two teenagers whose main problem is they never talk to each other. An hour's worth of honest conversation would have solved the problem. And the hero was unfaithful to his wife and she, being a total marshmallow, tolerated it. A villainous neighbor aggressively and threatened pursued the wife but the husband neither protected her nor defended her yet she thought that his behavior was alright. I was disgusted with both of them long before I finished the last page.

So I only gave it 3-1/2 stars because it was too annoying how stupid the author made the heroine when it came to Mr Kemp. Really. Innocence and naivety only goes so far, to keep putting herself in stupid situations annoyed me to no end. Though once she was finally consistent with how she felt and acted with him I could start enjoying the book more, though I kept wondering if she would flip and be stupid again. I don't like when authors make the girls more than naive, but stupid. Lady Jane was great how she put mr kemp in his place. But the story other than that was fun and the aunts escapades although a little unrealistic were entertaining nonetheless. So read it if you can get past the naive heroine for 2/3 of the book.

Nice read and fun story.

Ambiguent about this story, went into it expecting, to be entertained with romance and humour. Found it a little boring, and too many story lines going at once and truly found none of them particularly interesting. The miscommunication between characters really became annoying, not interesting, to sum up really could leave this book,

I was so surprised to read the poor reviews on here; it's like we read completely different books! This is a charming Regency romance. It is romantic, sweet-natured and very witty. I really appreciated the wit. I read it in one night - couldn't put it down. Maybe the negative reviewers don't understand the genre. I've kept it on my book shelf for more than 30 years. If you like Regency romance, do yourself a favor and read this one.
In this Regency romance, the hero is a 19th century geek, extremely absentminded. He marries a neighbor to save her family from financial problems, but then apparently forgets he's married. Meanwhile, his sister has artistic ambitions, in an era when girls don't do such things. All ends happily, of course. It's funnier than the average romance, but still romantic.
