Tragicomedy in the Endgame: Instructive Mistakes of the Masters. An analysis of the possible causes of endgame mistakes must naturally begin with a weak grasp of theory. And this is not only because of what can be seen from a great number of tragicomic episodes from chess praxis. The parsing (for experienced players – repetition) of some of the most important theoretical positions and ideas will be useful in other parts of the book and it will be necessary to refer to them repeatedly.

Mark Dvoretsky is ideally qualified for this project because of his vast experience in this area and his large collection . Many chessplayers have read Dvoretsky’s Endgame Manual ( DEM ).

My new book will help them recall important theoretical positions and technical methods, as well as study several sections on endgame theory in depth (for example, rook and bishop versus rook, or rook endings with f- and h-pawns).

Mark Dvoretsky is a world-famous trainer and his publications are mostly very good. He also has an excellent "laboratory" for testing the materials with his pupils, which clearly cleans stupid mistakes off from the books.

The title of the book could be slightly misleading with an idea to make fun of pointing stupid mistakes made by strong grandmasters, but fortunately this is not the case here. The examples are selected very well and the idea behind the title is more like

"studying endgames is very important, because there is a lot of (half)points on the plate - look, even strong grandmasters doesn't always find their way in the thicket of endgame nuances with quick time controls of today."

To make the cases from real world makes it more human. Personally I have always found studing endgames longer than an hour boring, but this content somehow keeps you better on the subject - the examples are interesting and well selcted. The bright side compared to some earlier works of Mr. D is that this is not so "heavy-to-read" as some earlier D's works.

This is a kind of "sister book" for DEM (Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual), but they work great also separately. Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual

Highly recommended for an ambitious player wanting to learn more about real-world endings!
