S. Forester was born in Cairo in 1899, where his father was stationed as a government official. They’ were Hornblower and Bush, and the sentence tells us we are back in the beguiling company of Horatio Hornblower. He studied medicine at Guy’s Hospital, and after leaving Guy’s without a degree he turned to writing as a career. Bush, of course, had died in Lord Hornblower, one of the saddest moments of the saga, but his reappearance in Hornblower and the Crisis tells us that Forester was again plugging the gaps in his hero’s long story. The book was published in 1966, the year of Forester’s death.

Horatio Hornblower is a fictional Napoleonic Wars–era Royal Navy officer who is the protagonist of a series of novels and stories by C. Forester. He was later the subject of films, radio and television programmes, and C. Northcote Parkinson elaborated a definitive biography. The original Hornblower tales began with the 1937 novel The Happy Return (. title Beat to Quarters) with the appearance of a junior Royal Navy captain on independent duty on a secret mission to Central America.

This book provides much interesting background to the show and to the British navy and seafaring during the time period of the Forester stories, and to my knowledge it is the only book of its kind available. Too bad the paper is flimsy (cheap?) and some of the pages weren't even printed, leaving pages-long gaps in the interviews and articles. I bought this for my grandmother to go along with the TV show, which is one of her favorites, and she still likes reading it anyway. Still, I might have expected more from a book intended to accompany a show of such high quality!

This is a really good book on the behind the scenes and making of the Horatio Hornblower tv movies. It gives a lot of details of what the production was like including interviews with the cast and their views of the tv movies and their experiences on it and their characters. it is a very good companion piece for those who like Horatio Hornblower.

Having stumbled across this book recently, I knew I just HAD to have it! I had recently become a big fan of the Horatio Hornblower series, (having missed its airing the first time around), I found this book informative and full of photos, many I had not seen before, including on the Internet.

I enjoyed the parts on building the Grand Turk, the ship they used to stand in as the HMS Indefatigable, the blue print drawings of that ship, and the building of large scale models they used for filming the battle scenes. I particulary found the part on recreating the era of 'Nelson's Navy' and costuming the most helpful as I am putting together my own cosplay costume from the era. The book also contains interviews with the principle actors and synopsis of the first four episodes.

The only thing I would say that they could have done to improve the book would have been to make it bigger and more in depth in some areas, but at 124 pages, they have packed quite a bit in there, and with plenty of Hornblower 'eye candy'.

If you love all things Hornblower, then get it!

I love this book. Aside from the tons of great pictures of the cast, it gives a lot of background on all the characters - including the boat that they used to for filming.
There are brief synopsis' on all the movies as well as a brief rundown of the characters we meet in each movie.
Wonderful interviews, beautiful pictures, and indepth characterization from the actor's perspective.
This is a great book for any Hornblower fan!

I first decided to watch A&E's Horatio Hornblower because I had caught a glimpse of Ioan Gruffudd, and thought he was very handsome. But, as I watched, I got caught up in the movie, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole series. Then, when I learned there was a behind-the-scenes book availiable, I knew I had to have it. I tried all the local bookstores (and some not so local, too) with no luck. Then I tried Amazon, and I finally got my book. It is a great book, with loads of candid pictures and still frames from the filming of the series. I enjoyed learning how all the battle scenes were filmed, about the use of scale models, and all the hard work put into the filming of Horatio Hornblower. I would definately reccommend this book to anyone who liked the series. It is a wonderful, informative, and captivating look at the behind-the-scenes action of the best miniseries I have ever seen, Horatio Hornblower.
