Once in awhile someone comes up with a new perception that turns out to be valuable. This is the case with Ecology and Popular Film, by Robin L. Murray and Joseph K. Heumann. They have fresh insights and intelligent appreciations of films, many of which have shaped public understanding and attitudes towards issues concerning the environment. Often these films were made long before the public was even aware of something called "the environment". Nonetheless, our perceptions are conditioned by these films. Perhaps most interesting is the revelation that some of these films were once applauded for bringing to public consciousness issues, such as flood control, but succeeding decades have revealed that there were larger, more significant issues for which the films in question provided embedded attitudes that were not so helpful. Well written and much needed.

Ecology and Popular Film: Cinema on the Edge is the rare contribution from academia that is actually an enjoyable read. Packed with interesting facts and perspectives, Cinema on the Edge takes an ecocritical look into motion pictures. The book explores the deeper messages of an otherwise heterogeneous group of films and the ecological lessons we the viewer can take from them. This book is an excellent study of the relationship between popular culture and ecology. Well researched, well written, highly recommended.
